I am getting ready to purchase some Kooks 1 3/4" headers for my C6. What are the pros and cons to picking either 2 1/2" or 3" X-pipe and cats?
I figuring you get a few more ponies with the 3", but you also get a louder system. How much louder though?
I had the same question and ended up going with the 2-1/2".
The pipes they hook into are 2-1/2" (at least the stock exhaust or my Corsa Sports). I called Kooks and they told me that even the 3" X-pipe goes down to 2-1/2" to connect into my Corsa over-axle pipes or the stock pipes.
I figured that if they're gonna go down to 2-1/2" for the final couple of feet before going into the muffler that I'd just go with the 2-1/2" all the way.
So, I don't know if it would be louder or if there is any HP gains from the 3" if they're going to be restricted down to 2-1/2" through the muffler anyway. If you're going to run some kind of exhaust with 3" over-axle pipes, go for the 3".
I went with 2-1/2" 'cause that's what they're going down to in the end anyway to go through my Corsas.
Come to Boca this Sunday for the meet! We all want to hear your kooks with Corsas!!
I'd love to come down, but I'm drivin' Miss Linda and her sister Miss Kitty all over Central Florida!!
My wife's sister is here visiting and I'm doing the chauffeur duty to every mall within a couple hour drive of Daytona. They did the outlet stores in St. Augustine yesterday. If I could get all 3 of us in the 'Vette Boca would be a go - I'd drop them off at the nearest mall!
Anyway, I don't have the Kooks on yet. I just ordered them with the TByrne GP and they say they won't ship until the end of June.
Have a great time at the cruise-in and post some pics!!!
I think you need to stay with the 2 1/2" pipe. Until you get into some real high hp, using larger primary pipes, I think the larger pipes can actually result in less power efficiency. Maybe an exhaust technician can give the details, but that is my understanding.
I have kooks system that's 3 inches to the pipes over the rear end. They don't make a 2 1/2 in X-pipe only 3 inch. Then you can get 2 1/2 or 3 inch sections to the rear end.
had the 2 1/2 inch and replaced them. It's only the two sections that are 2 1/2 feet long after the X-pipe. It's no louder than the smaller size. It hooks up to magnaflows after that. It all works great. I don't think kooks makes the two 2 1/2 inch sections anymore, because nobody want them.

I would think the only reason to do a 3" is if you plan on adding a 3" exhaust later. Otherwise I would stay with the 2.5", it seems to me going from smaller to larger, etc would just cause additional turbulence.
