Default Normal Oil Temps?

Z51/MN6/No Mods

What "should" the normal operating temps for oil be?

I find mine running between 219 & 225 for the most part (city/hwy driving in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. - 85-95* ambient temps, 85% humidity or better). Coolant temps range between 195 & 205.

Should the Z51 Oil Cooler reduce these temps (or would they actually be HIGHER without the cooler)?

Are these temps to be expected in this type of ambient temperature?

Rick

You oil temp is normal, and you have a long way to go before heat becomes an oil issue. In fact, you WANT the oil to reach at least 212dF so that any accumulated water vapor will be expelled from the oil. There is nothing to worry about until the oil temp gets to at least 265dF.

Engines run better with oil in the 220-230dF range than with oil in the 180dF range (where better means longer life, more power, lower emissions).

My Z51 had similar numbers on a recent trip. About the same ambient temps, but less humidity.

Just for comparison, after I saw your thread, I checked my non-Z51 auto. tranny today. Driving 75 MPH on the interstate, ambient temp 91 deg F, about 75% to 85% humidity, oil temp. running consistently 225 deg. Coolant 199 deg. to 205 deg.
