Just my opinion, but I prefer the Z51 for two main reasons, tires and gearing. The suspension bits aren't really a big deal on the street. The Z51 gearing feels much better to me, especially 1st gear starts and cruising/accelerating on the freeway (Z51 keeps the rpms higher in each gear except 4th).
Actually, this disagrees just a little with early GM predictions. They originally said (for 0-60):
4.3 sec. for base 6-spd
(did not find quotes for base auto w std axle)
(did not find quotes for base auto w perf. axle, but w/o Z51)
4.5 sec. for auto w Z51 (which automatically includes perf. axle)
4.1 sec. for 6-spd w Z51
4.6 sec. for auto w/o Z51 (doesn't say anything about which axle)
Maybe GM is quoting new numbers if those quoted as being from "BG" are from GM.
I am going to get a C6 Corvette and am currently leaning towards the base suspension with a manual transmission. I don't plan on racing the car and I want it to be confortable for long weekend drives, which is why I am leaning towards the base suspension.
All the published performance statistics I see are for the Z51 with a manual transmission.
I am wondering what kind of performance hit one takes by choosing the
base suspension which has the taller gearing and harder tires.
I don't want to be getting out run by some kid in a new Mustang GT.
If anybody knows where I can find the 0 - 60 and quarter mile times for
a non Z51 stock C6 I would appreciate it
Thanks
I would suggest that you take a look at some of the earlier threads about the Z51's tire wear issues. If you replace them every 3000 - 8000 miles like a lot of Z51 drivers say they are having to do, you could be spending a bundle of $$$$.
I would also suggest that you dont worry about the kid in the Mustang GT or the Cobra or the BMW or Mercedes or the 06 Z06 or the crotch rocket.
Buy what feels right and enjoy your new vette for what it is!
Yeah don't worry about the C6 but the fact is the new Mustang and the C5 are pretty close in numbers.
No, not really. A C5 six speed will pretty easily run high 12's in the quarter at 110 - 112. A Mustang runs very high 13's at about 103 (best I have seen). That is a pretty big difference.
At last! The myth of the Z51 package is exposed. People have hyped this option so much that newbies think it is a seperate Corvette model.
At last? I was reading things like this before I even took delivery back in November of my Z51. There should be no confusion about the numbers as even other driving sources were posting them back then...unless of course you had ostrichitus and were burying your head in the sand.
