What do any of you know about the new 6-speed paddle shift auto going into the '06's? Is it a GM transmission or from elsewhere? Is it used in other GM/non-GM vehicles? If so, how long has it been around and what has the experience been with it?

Its a brand new automatic transmission designed and built by GM. Eventually, after they work the bugs out of it, GM hopes to use it in most of its V8 powered vehicles, particularly light trucks. The push button shifter probably won't be in the trucks, though. That's just a gimmick thrown on the Corvette for marketing purposes.
If you look at the gear ratios, you can plainly see that it is biased toward a truck that may tow a trailer. The very low first gear and the double overdrives are clear tipoffs that this thing is going to be a good fit for a truck with a decent rear axle ratio. It'll give a loaded 2500 Silverado plenty of grunt for starting off, and the top gears will give an unloaded truck good economy.
Well, hope it turns out to be good in Vettes too because I just ordered one as a compromise with my wife.
We'll have to wait and see, but I expect within a couple of years the aftermarket will have this thing figured out, and will have the right parts to make it work behind a strong engine on the track.
The thing that concerns me most is all the torque its going to load onto the relatively weak 2.xx rear. Likely Chevy is going to dial in a lot of torque management to keep it from shelling rear ends.
