Here are a few changes between the 2005 and 2006 C6 rear diffs.
The pinion support is re enforced on the 2006 (left).
The speedo reluctor behind the ring gear on the 2005 (right) is now just a spacer on the 2006 (left), the sensor was relocated over the ring gear teeth.
The 2006 trans mounting has been widened and re enforced.
The 2006 housing has more webbing/support.
Both output shafts are splined into the side gears on the 2006.
The 2006 (bottom) output shaft is stronger, it's not narrowed after the splines like on the C5, and 2005 C6 (top).

Amazing - all those "hidden" changes, jut in the rear. I wonder what other changes have been made that were not part of the 'official' press release describing the '06 changes?
Great info Julio - I wonder if that change to add stregnth is to support the additional HP of the Z06? Or does the Z get a different center section?

There is another rear diff part number listed for 2006 so that very well could mean that the Z06 will be upgraded even further from this 'already stronger than 2005' unit....or it could just be a change for the new 2006 automatic models.

Possibly but I don't think so, it would've had to have been a very late 2005 change...there was a slight O ring/cover change within the 2005 run I think.

No, it was instituted to lower the value of my car and make tuners insist on giving you back the same garbage carrier you send in as a core since no one will want the crap 05 carrier.
Wow I find that very interesting. I assume if we order the DTE or others it will be as strong and updated?
Indeed they are. We have two of these differentials here also and we find it very interesting and gratifying that the very same component design changes, upgrades and refinements the manufacturer (GM/Getrag) has chosen to implement into the 2006 assembly for added strength, are the very same one's we've already engineered into our HD differential products for the last three years now.... Funny how that works and if the manufacturer chooses this, we know were already on the right track!

i have a very late 05 auto and was wondering what the part number would be and is it exposed so that you can find it?
Same one, I'm thinking that all new 6 speeds (and maybe even automatics) will have the upgraded rear as pictured above.
I'd say especially the automatics. There was some concern that with all the extra torque multiplication in the A6's first gear, the diff would be under a lot more stress. Seems GM thought that way too, and beefed up the diff to handle it.
Umm, he was asking which rear the Z51 package uses, my response was "the same one" as in the same one as shown above which should, to the best of my knowledge, also be the same one as the base (6 speed) car.

Good point, this would also make more sense from a manufacturing/parts supply point of view as well, less part numbers to make and stock, hope so.
