Default 160 Stat ??

This might be a very basic question that I should no ther awnser to but I dont, so any help would be greatly apprecaited.

Why would you put a new thermastat in the C6 - 160 Stat? What does it do to help the cars performance?

Also - Is this a mandatory thing once you have had your ECM Tuned by Ron Zimmer?

Thanks guys

I see no reason to change the thermostat on a stock Corvette. The oil will last longer with less sludge and the car will run like it was designed to run.

Default If you're leaving it stock, don't change it.

I've had a 99 Z-28, 2002 C5 both heavely modifed, as is my C6,and they all had or have a 160 stat. Reason, these motors are very heat sensitive. and pull timming as they approch 200 degrees. With more timming and different fuel trims detonation can be an issue. running a motor at a cooler temp aids in preventing KR, and allows these modifed motors to perform much better. My 2002 which my son has makes over 400RWHP has 80000 on the clock and runs great as a daily driver. No issues.
There has been a great debate about thermostats on this forum. My tunner Ron Zimmer At Z-indurtries says run them,Ed potter At LPE says they run them in every Lingdenfelter package they sell. If the best tunners in the world for these motors say do it , it's good enough for me. My temps in my C6 run at 176-183 on the highway, and in the high 180's in town depending on how long I spend at a light. nonetheless, my oil temps run at 203-5 on the highways and 216-220 in town. plenty hot enough to cook out the impurities and moisture. You have to remember that GM must select a thermostat that will work in every part of the country at every possible outside temp. So the middle of the road is a 186.6 degree stat. It keeps the car in an acceptable range to operate.
Maybe not the best for all out performance, but most people neglect their cars than take care of them, oil, gas octanes, etc. Not everybody is a gearhead or car nut. I know it's hard to believe, but some corvette people don't care for their cars, and GM must take that fact into account in developing the best operating ranges for their vehicles. So if you're not going to mod the car with headers, exhaust, cam, heads or a stroker, then leave it alone and enjoy your ride.My .02 cents
