Has anyone had a problem with their breaks sqeaking on their C6? I took it into the Chevy dealership and they told me it is a commen problem with the new corvette's and GM does not have a solution to fix the problem yet. The noise sounds like I need to break pads, like when all you hear is the metal grinding. Although they said my breaks and pads were perfect, I only have 5800 miles and mostly highway. If anyone has any ideas to fix the problem, please let me know!
GM does have ceramic brake pads for the C6 - for both the Z51 and non-Z51. The dealer installed them on my non-Z51 after many service visits and many requests to replace the pads. They did say that the pads were the same for Z51 and non-Z51... I have not experienced one squeak or squeal since the ceramics were installed and there's almost zero brake dust on my wheels!
If you can't get your dealer to cooperate (might be an issue since the ceramic pads run about $600 for a full set) you might try a few high performance stops (my dealer suggested this early on and it seemed to help).
Here's how I did high performance stops in my C6:
On a long, straight, deserted road, on a warm, clear day I took my C6 up to 80 mph and left plenty of room to stop at the end. On the first stop, I agressively depressed the brake, but not hard enough to engage the anti-lock system and brought the vehicle to a complete stop. This allowed me to get used to keeping the vehicle under control during the "accelerated stop" and to get a feeling of how well the braking system works. Then I did it again but this time I mashed the brake pedal to the floor. I was amazed at how quickly the C6 can stop! I repeated the procedure once more then drove home normally with minimal braking. After that the severe squealing was significantly reduced. I can not say how long this will last since I had the ceramic pads installed a couple of weeks later, but I was much happier.
i have a 2006 z51 with about 450 miles and get a little squeal the last couple feet before i come to full stop under light pedal pressure. is there a tbs number or where can i get a copy to take to the dealer to save time.
