Anyone see any problems with getting Halltech, heads, mild cam, and tuning? I want to get over 400hp at the rear wheels, but don't want any warranty issues. It will be done by a nationally known vette shop, so I'm not concerned about the workmanship, only the potential issues that a novice might not be realizing. Thanks.
Federal Warranty Laws
1.The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(C))
This federal law regulates warranties for the protection of consumers. The essence of the law concerning aftermarket auto parts is that a vehicle manufacturer may not condition a written or implied warranty on the consumers using parts or services which are identified by brand, trade, or corporate name (such as the vehicle maker's brand) unless the parts or service are provided free of charge. The law means that the use of an aftermarket part alone is not cause for denying the warranty. However, the law's protection does not extend to aftermarket parts in situations where such parts actually caused the damage being claimed under the warranty. Further, consumers are advised to be aware of any specific terms or conditions stated in the warranty which may result in its being voided. The law states in relevant part:
“No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumers using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name...” (15 U.S.C. 2302(C)).
Fresh air intake; Most Dealers will still honor the powertrain warranty.
Tuning; Some Dealers might honor the power train warranty.
Heads & Cam; No dealer will honor the power train warranty.
Part of the cost of increased performance. Why should a Dealer warranty an engine after somebody bought aftermarket parts and had somebody else do the installation?

Excellent summation.
You go with a heads and cam package and it opens the door for a lot of potential issues with your factory warranty.
Also if you are looking to get that kind of power, it might be worth it to beef up the driveline parts as well.
You could probably eek out 400 HP with bolt ons.
There is absolutely no reason to go inside a perfectly good motor to put a "tiny" cam in there. Just do bolt ons, if something does break and you get worried about warranty, bolt back on the stock items.

I think that he has an A4. That probably puts him around 320 or thereabouts bone stock.
He says he wants to get to over 400. Its going to be tough for him to pick up 80 RWHP with the usual bolt ons.
For that he is probably looking at either heads and cam, forced induction or nitrous.

Get the work done by a tuner that gives you a warranty for the work they do....if you get a head cam job then get that warrantied by the tuner....example: Lingenfelter. 2 yr/24k
Option 2 is to get a forced induction set-up and remove it if there is an issue for repair work.

Tuner warranty vs. GM warranty is a Catch 22 situation.
The Tuner sells and installs heads and a cam, his warranty covers his parts and his work. If you lose the bootom end of your motor the Tuner won't warranty it because he didn't touch it and GM won't warranty it because of the head and cam. You lose either way.
