Default "Creaking" Roof

I've always hated this about Targas, but my (05 street coupe) roof "creaks" and "pops" every time I hit a rough spot in the road. Any tricks at adjusting it so that it is quiet?

My Porsche was a nightmere and the C6 is by far a way better Targa. But, mine started creaking about 5000 miles. Go to GM and ask them to apply there tricky dick seal lubricant. It really helped out my top noise. The stuff is $60 an oz!!! If they are clueless I can get a pn for you. The guy put a bottle on the warrantee ticket and gave me his. I thought that was nice of him.

Just use some silicone grease on the mounting points of the top, and any other mating surface. It'll help for a while, but I have to redo mine every few months it seems.

Mine made the same noises. Use Shin-Etsu grease available at Honda/Accura dealers. Apply it to the attach points. It worked for me and many others. I have not had to re-apply it in almost a year. Just make sure your not experiencing a delamination problem where the roof is separating from it's base/frame.

I know it didn't apply to all or even most cars in 2005 but I really hope this has been addressed/corrected for 2006.

mine is an early 05, so either could be the problem. I'll pull the top off and "lube" and inspect the roof glue.

lubed up the front positioning "prongs" with sil grease, and hope for the best. The prongs have rubber-ish o-rings on them, so I'm surprised they make the noise they do.

I didn't see any problems with the top separating, but I'll keep an eye on it, especially if the problem persists.

Thanks again!

My vote is the separation. Mine was hard to see and required a close inspection. In my case it was separating on the back drivers side about half way to center. Only about a 1/16 or so gap but there should have been none. Top is replaced and the creaking is gone.

No. If it is separated, it needs to be replaced. If I remember right, there is a 2 step bonding process and the place that did the roofs forgot to do one of the steps on a large portion of them.

I had the same problem (in my C5)...sit in the car and release all the latches...now pull down "J" hook on the rear latch...look carefully at the base of the "J" hook you should see a small "set screw." Use the appropriate Allen wrench to loosen (BUT DO NOT REMOVE) the "set screw"...then take one turn clockwise on the "J" hook. Not, re-latch your top (starting from the front) and then latch the rear one (it will take a little bit more pressure to latch it). Take it for a drive and see if you notice any difference. If not, repeat the process one more time...I wouldn't exceed a second turn on the "J" hook...

Hopefully, this will get rid of your creaking...the process pulls the top to the rear a bit making it a bit more snug.

Good luck!

My top was creaking prior to delaminating and blowing off the car. If you ever hear a wind noise out of the ordinary, hit the brakes and head for Mr Goodwrench as your top is about ready to self destruct. After GM replaced my top, the creaking stopped, hopefully for good. Merry Christmas!

Default GM Recall letter this week re roof probems...

Yep, they did, I got my letter in the mail last week dated February 2006 from GM, it says from GM "a snapping noise when driving over bumps."

They say they will "apply adhesive foam to ensure proper adhesion. In a smaller number of vehicales, the roof panel may require replacement."

My letter from GM gives me until March 31, 2007.

I talked to the dealer, and the "adhesive form" is injected, so you don't see it, so they say.

Hope the fix works!

You should get a letter soon.

As with the many "roof recall" threads...

They check it with a feeler gauge. If the gap exceeds a certain width, they replace the top. Mine needs replacement...

Getting a popping from the drivers side/front. Been getting steadily worse.

This week, I just got the recall notice from GM about the painted roof. If it hasn't been separating, there's a fix that the dealer will do to prevent separation, shooting a foam adhesive into it or something along those lines. I don't know if it stops the creaking or not. I should be getting it done in the next week or two. Hopefully is ends the dreadful creaking and popping.

I bought a roll of felt. It has adhesive like velcro on one side. I ran it all along the front and back of the roof and it has been very quiet every since.

I did the same thing for the center council squeak lots of us has and is quiet as a mouse. Trying to solve shifter buzz now...
