What mechanically keeps me from accidentally shifting the 6spd manual tranny into reverse when going to 5th gear? Gotta be something in there that would prevent this (or have I clearly just displayed my ignorance??).
There is a electronic solenoid that prevents it when vehicle speed is detected. A similar solenoid is what locks out 2nd to force a 1-4 shift under certain circumstances for fuel economy improvement.

Thanks. Makes sense. I knew about the CAGS solenoid, so I can see using the same approach to prevent an accidental shift into reverse.
Still use common sense when shifting. Its only a safety device and could fail. Think of it as a safety on a gun. Its there as a last resort.
Nothing beats common sense.
The cags eliminator works by unplugging the solenoid for 2nd grear and pluging that plug into the eliminator so the car still thinks it is working. The solenoid for reverse lockout would be a different connection; however, the connector is the same. So, someone could install it incorrectly and eliminate reverse lockout instead of skip shift. Hopefully the cags eliminator has good clear instructions.
The reverse gate seems to have an extra heavy spring and wider to keep you from doing that. It takes a conscious effort to get it into reverse. Try sitting in the car at a standstill and see if you are even able to shift into reverse while going for 5th as quickly as possible. I don't think you can. I've never heard of anyone ever doing this on any car.
