3.90s in mine. The stock gears in all the boxes are compromised by cafe and in the case of the Z51 and A6 gearboxes by gearing to meet specific performance metrics while simultaneously keeping the best economy possible. Gears be very good. Guys with the standard manual get it best because they have the least compromised gearing (outside of the final drive) among the stock boxes. Probably the best performance mod available for these cars on a dollar per dollar ratio.
There is no noticeable difference in streetability from 3.90's to 4.10's. I have the 4.10's. The reason 3.90's may be of more value to some is that they allow higher trap speeds for running in the 10's for drag racing. A street car will benefit best from 4.10's.
It's all in what you want. As Spin said above the 4.10s are better off the line. If you want all out performance the 4.10s or even a 4.56 may be right for you.
I'm a daily driver with frequent trips of 200 mi or better. I will go 3.90 when the time comes
3.90 in 05 and 4.10 in the 06 with Cartek's www.cartek.net Stage 1 package. I'll be @ Cartek on the morning of April 17 to have installed their Stage 2X cam & head package plus a performance clutch and shift light. 60 years old and loving it all. My bike is a custom with a Kendall Johnson 124" which puts 145 H.P. to the ground. I'll admit the bike scares me.
I have a '05 Z-51 with a 6 speed man, and I went from the 3.42 it came with to the 3.9. I don't agree, am finding 1st and 2nd too steep when you really want to punch it. It's not until 3rd that the car takes off like a rocket. Looking back I would have gone (with the Z-51) with a 3.73. I still may. Just my take.
Yes you want to be careful with too much gears. Andy at A&A told me that he found 3.73 on the Z51 and 3.90 on the standard stick to be about right in terms of feel. He has driven just about every combination that exists so his observations are worth consideration. Keep in mind he was discussing feel, not what gears will give maximum performance in terms of acceleration. How it feels to drive is probably just as important an issue as gaining performance for most people because gears really change a cars personality. You dont want your lower gears to feel too short or the car to be buzzy out on the freeway. I doubt all that many people are concerned with top end but if you are you should check a speed/gearing chart to see where you will be at. With the gears normally used and at stock power you will still be reaching top end in 5th so this is the gear your going to want to be looking at. As pointed out already, other things to watch our for are gearing too low to reach the end of the quarter in fourth. With the gears normally used few people will have enough power (or traction) to make this an issue but its something to think about if it applies. If your going to add power you will also want to consider the traction issue. Stock gears might be better for someone whos going to get north of 400 rear wheel that does not want to tub it or take other measures to get the power down.
