Default Magnaflow question

I have a 2006 A6 coupe. In the process of trying to get a little better sounding exhaust system then the stock one this is where I am at. First we whacked off the stock mufflers and welded on just some magnaflow mufflers (#14336). For the price this is a good way to go. It has great sound but does have some drone in the 1400-1800 RPM range and with road trips planned for this summer I want to see If I can calm it down a little more.
I now have a full magnaflow cat-back system (#15884) sitting in my garage waiting for better weather to get it installed.
My question is has anyone installed this system on a car like mine and if so what are your thoughts on the fit and the sound.

Thanks.

I have the system on an '05 A4. Only drone comes in at 1800-2200 under light acceleration (leaving a redlight at 1/4 throttle). At cruise, it is as quiet as stock, and opens up like crazy above 3500 rpms. I haven't heard the Magnaflow weld on solution yet, so can't comment on the differences. Not exactly the A6, but should be close enough.

I have the Magnaflow #15884.

I removed my Bullets and put the Magnaflow system on and I am happy with the new exhaust

This is how the Vette should have sounded from the factory, nice smooth V8 sounds.

Not TOO quiet and loud enough that you always feel and hear it, but in a good way. NO DRONE at all, just a smooth V8 hum, not to be confued with the BASSY drone of other systems.
The Magnaflows volume inside the car with the windows and top up is about perfect, it could be a BIT louder for me, but I am fine with it.
With the top and windows down I have not had as much experieince since it is still 30-40 degrees here, but the few times I have had the top down it sounded good, but it could be a BIT louder as I like loud, BUT NOT BULLET LOUD AND DRONEY.

The Bullets DRONED to a point that it hurt your ears with the windows and TOP up. They sounded GREAT with the TOP down, but unfortunately half the year here is COLD!
The Bullets were so LOUD that you could not listen to SPORTS TALK RADIO without missing alot of words.

Do a search under Magnaflow or my user name and you will get losts of info.

I'm ready to install the same system on mine. My question is has anyone installed high flow cats at the same time? A local shop recommended high flow cats but I can't find anything listed for a C6 yet?

I installed the Magnaflow 15884 on an A6 C6 coupe about a month ago. It's exactly what I wanted after living with a droner on my C5 (Borla). I like being able to hear the engine too. A beautiful sound at WOT and a db increase from 72 to 73 at cruise.

Small problem with that scenario. The cats are integrated into the stock headers. You would have to do a lot of cutting and re-welding to get hi-flows in with just an exhaust (catback) change.

If you want to go that route, then buy headers too (long tubes), and the hi-flow cat center section (X-pipe) to go along, which moves the cats back under the car a bit. I have Kooks with their 3" x-pipe and Random Technology hi-flow cats. All header manufacturers have a hi-flow center section to go along with their headers (at least the majority).

I'm pretty sure they are not integrated ... my freind works at MagnaFlow and I have seen their high flow cats and mid pipes for the C6.

I'm going to e-mail him and see if he can shoot me some pictures.

***EDIT***
Here are the MagnaFlow part numbers for the High Flow

Here are the pictures he sent me:

Excellent. I was picturing mine on the floor of the garage and have never paid attention to the flanges for the cats at the collector...that's a really good set of pics for the cats.

Thanks for posting it up. A friend at Magnaflow...must be nice.

Thanks for the info! I'll take these magnaflow pages to my exhaust shop.

I would love to do long tube headers but has anyone had any heat related issues?

None here. It is cooler than my C5 was without LT headers.

Default Magnaflows

I have LT Headers, high flow cats, X-Pipe and magnaflow cat backs and I love them. There is some slight vibration noise (drone I guess that is what you all call it) in the 1700-2000 RPM range but just slight and only if you're poking around like in heavy traffic. I don'y usually poke around. Mine had the drone same with just cat backs but had to listen hard to hear it in the same range. The LT's just made it a bit more but very little really. Open it up with that set up and it sounds bad a** like a built race car. Add in the CAI, Tune, 160F Thermo and I'm still learning to harness the power as she will bust loose the tire in 1st and 2nd with no problem when shifting. I usually take my 2005/A4 and manually shift if I really want to get it and it does. I don't see the sense in saving a couple dollars to cut and weld because I have the stock exhaust and could quickly re-install it if I wanted to quiet it down even more, knowing I would loose some performance. Everyone has a budget but if you can afford it might as well do the whole exhaust, CAI and Tune and you will see a significant difference in performance. Don't pay anyone for the 160F Thermo as that is 2 bolts and maybe 1 hour to install yourself including drain and refilling the radiator. That's my 2c on it and what worked for me. The only thing I don't know for sure is the Halltech I have would I be better off with a Calloway Honker breathing only from the bottom as the Halltech draws air from all around the filter, but that opens up a whole big thread that somewhere in here has been discussed before. Can't justify $300 for 3-5hp I may or may not get and certainly won't feel after buying the halltech first.
