imo, auto-volume is very subtle.
it's my understanding that the nav unit has three settings (min/max/off)for auto-volume while the 6 cd unit only has two (on/off).
one way to test it to see if its working properly or not is to take a highway/freeway/interstate drive, set the volume at a comfortable level. After a few minutes, hours, etc. take the exit and slow at the next stop light/sign (don't touch the stereo). Did the volume lower itself ? Did you have to turn it down because it was too loud ? Now, reverse the process, Set your volume at a comfortable level (before starting the car), start the car (did the volume rise).

Auto volume is annoying anyway. I have never used it in any of my vehicles. Just what I need, trying to talk to my passenger or on the cell and having to fiddle with the volume because it increased as I merged onto the highway. Dumb.

The auto volume on my 2001 Coupe had distinct stages- you could hear a sudden increase in volume when you reached certain speeds.
On my 2006 Coupe with Nav, I have auto volume turned on and i THINK it works- don't find myself fiddling with the volume control very much. Of course, the C6 doesn't get as noisy at speed. My impression is that the auto volume works but it's very gradual and perhaps not as effective as we would wish.

I don't have the Nav, just the 1SB radio system. My AUTO VOL does work, although it only gives you a choice on ON or OFF.
When I'm on the interstate at 75 MPH, I've got the vol. set to get over the road noise. When I get off the interstate & slow down to 30-40 mph, there is a definite drop in volume. I could carry on a conversation with a passenger without any trouble at all.
Others with the non-Nav said theirs did not work.
