What is the name of the substance that is placed on the ends of new break pads that prevents chatter? The new set I received from GM does not include the small ampule as does other brake pad kits.
There is a black grease, kinda like graphite, that some guys use at the anchor points. The theory being that some of the squeal is coming from the pad oscillating (metal pad backing against metal anchor point). Use sparingly you don't want this stuff getting on your rotors.
I think your looking for a disc brake "anti-squeal compound". Most go on in liquid form and dry up kind of rubbery, much like RTV silicone. The compond always goes on the back side of the pads. Never use grease.
With all the "brake squeal" issues the C6 has, I'm surprised there is not much talk about using anti-squeal compound.
My stock brakes have been fine, though the right front occasionally squeals only during light braking... the squeal goes away once the brakes are applied harder. This would tend to indicate that the squeal is due to pad vibration, which in theory would be cured using an anti-squeal compound.
Has anyone used an anti-squeal compound on a squealing C6 with success?
If my right front continues to occasionally squeal under light pedal pressure, I will pull the caliper, clean and rough up the surfaces of the rotor and brake pads, chamfer the edges of the pads a bit, and re-install using anti-squeal compound. I'd think that would do the trick.
On my C3 I tried evrything available to stop the squeak with any type of performance pads.. No luck.. However.... If I used the soft OEM pads there was no screech. Problem solved. My C6 doesn't make any sound except when it is cold at very low speed and then nothing to complain about. When I need pad.... OEM for me...

There isn't lot of hands on problem solving done here.
I am surprised that more on the non-hands on people haven't taken their squealers to a good brake shop. A good brake tech will have lot of anti-squeal tricks up his sleeve. Even more then the good ideas you listed.
Where I live, Advance and O'Reilly both have these little gray packets of brake lubricant by the cash registers. its a clear grease. Its used for the slider pins and contact points. The brand is AGS Sil-Glyde. I try to include a packet in each set of exchange calipers I send out, except when they are out of stock.
