We are ordering a C-6 with the 6spd. auto. The only differential gear ratio avail. is 2.56:1 for the auto, at least from what me and the sales consultant can tell. This won't be a big deal if the new auto trans. has a super low 1st. gear. With it having 6 forward gears it can have a pretty low first with 6th. being the same as 4th. on the old style trans. This makes sense to me but does the general think this way or maybe wants the auto to have really good mileage and figures auto trans. buyers aren't out for performance and will never notice. If you know the forward gear ratios of the new 6spd. auto let me know because this could be a deal breaker, or at least the first mod. thanks Joe.
Yes the only rear axle ratio is a 2.56.
Yes it has a VERY low first (and even second) gear in the trans.
And yes GM does want the car to return great fuel economy (and it does ).
That being said my (and other's) stock A6 still runs very quick/fast.
Thank you for the response. What are the ratios though, if anyone knows please respond. I am glad to hear that they are low as I was concerned about acceleration. Thank you Joe
Look at it this way, the A4 in the quarter mile runs through in 3rd gear. Even with the 3.15 rear end ratio, the 1.00 third gear gives you 3.15. With the 2.56 in the A6, third gear is 1.53, this give you 3.92.
The most gear people normally put in an A4 is a 3.73 and the A6 stock still has it beat. The A6 is esentially an automatic with a 3.92 rear gear. GM got this one right!

But, what gear is the car in when it crosses the finishline?
Is it 3rd or 4th? I don't have the time to figure it out, and I don't own a A6.
As a matter of fact, How fast does the A6 go at redline in each of it's 6 forward gears? That will tell you right there.
