Same here only I have to admit I used Melrose headers-they look the best and with hi-flo cats by Random Technology and x-pipe with stock mufflers, it sounds so sexy. NOt too loud at all and when you listen to it idle, you know something has been done but not really sure what. THATS DEFINITELY one way to go! very happy camper here. In fact, I may just jet coat the stock mufflers and pipe so it looks like the headers.
Depends on several factors:
1) How much louder do you want it?
2) How much money do you want to spend?
3) Do you expect to gain any H.P. from it?
4) Do you need it to be 100% street legal?
5) What kind of tips do you like?
Theres many more question you need to answer for yourself. However, many dont realize that long tube headers are really illegal for street use (even with cats) because they relocate the factory cats to another location.
Theres just as many opinions as there are threads about exhausts here.
I have an 06 A6 and am also considering headers (want a little more sound, but not too loud - more like a mustang GT....yikes did I just say that).
Does changing to Long Tube headers add the sound w/o introducing the Drone issue, if you stick with the stock exhaust/mufflers? Or is the drone an issue with all systems?
And to asnwer the questions asked above:
1) How much louder do you want it? (more muscle car like...not too loud)
2) How much money do you want to spend? (not sure)
3) Do you expect to gain any H.P. from it? (would like to gain power if it doesnt mean, I need a really loud car)
4) Do you need it to be 100% street legal? (yes, street legal and not too loud to be in a convertible)
5) What kind of tips do you like? (similar to stock)

That's like asking "which do you like best - blondes or brunettes?" It's all personal preference. I've done Corsa Sports with X-Pipe in my '05 MN6/Z51 & love 'em.

Corsa Sports or stock mufflers with headers that are JetHot coated. The sound is tame, the headers get you increase hp, and the JetHot with actually help lower the engine compartment temp.
You won't see any real power gain without the headers. Bullets would be way too loud.

Unfortunately it will never sound as good as a Mustang GT!
