What is the gear ratio for the new six speed auto transmission?
Read SilverCoupes post on ratios and multiply trans gear X rear gears and you'll see that the new A6 with a 2.56 rear in first gear (10.29:1) is actually a lower FINAL RATIO than the Z51 6spd Manual (10.16:1) in first gear.
Don't get hung up on higher number rear gear ratios, look at the overall final gearing.

True, but if those with the 6 speed manuals (especially those of the higher revving heads and cam variety) are often looking to do rear end gear swaps wouldn't the same still hold true for the A6 guys? I mean the 'industry standard' for A4 H/C cars was/is 3.73s (even 4.10s for the real radical set ups...3.42s for the more 'street/strip' type cars) and that is obviously too steep for the A6 but I would think that a 3.42 or at least 3.15s would be needed on the A6 to get it up in the range quicker for serious track duty.
In other words if one is willing to put 4.10s in their 6 speed manual C6 what would be the corresponding swap for an A6 car if traction and fuel economy were not an issue?
The 3.42 should be an easy swap as it is a standard gear set. You may even find a complete diff from a wreak. You say traction isn't a concern so this should work well.
Stock the A6 will run through the quarter in 3rd at around 5600-5700 rpm. With 3.42 gears you will be in 4th at the same rpms. Either gear (3rd & 2.56 or 4th & 3.42) will pull to 130 mph at redline. I gotta believe with traction the 3.42 will run faster with the extra gear working for you. But this is all based on calculations and not experience so take it for what it's worth.

When available, I will have 3.15's installed with a A6 tune/program for the track.

Check to see where this puts you, you will probably be in the middle of 4th gear, might as well go with the 3.42's. Of course, first gear could be a problem unless you run some sticky tires.
