Default vararam or honker

First off i did a search, and found nothing but arguements and blah blah blah. I am looking at either of these two intkaes. From what i have been told vararam has excellent customer service so if there is something you are unhappy wit hit will be solved. I dont hear to much about the honker can anyone give me some real numbers? Has anyone used it for 1/8 or 1/4 mile runs and gotten any proven numbers? I know vararam has been shown to work but if callaway will give close performance with better quality i would like it. Also can you actually feel the vararam working?

please if you havent used either dont post about how it couldnt possibly work, but if you have experienced either all info is appriciated.

Here you go. Real numbers. Believable numbers from their own site.

If your in a smog sensitive state, then it's a no-brainer. I believe only the Honker is smog CARB certified and comes with a sticker that goes onto your fender under the hood. There is no way I'm uninstalling one of these things and putting all the stock stuff back on just to pass smog (I'm in California).

I have the Honker and have noticed a slightly better pull with it.

I think the Honker isn't very attractive as I've seen others with carbon fiber hoods and vette emblems.

If I ever get to the drags, I plan to take the paper filter out for a bit more air flow. Haven't changed the filter yet, but it doesn't look like much work.

Stands to reason that either unit delivers ram air and that's a good thing probably only good for a few HP (some state as much as 18, but who knows), certainly it would be advantage if pitted against bone stock. Both units basically work the same way and do the same thing - can't imagine one delivers better performance than the other. Also they are both just air filters... can't imagine "quality" is much concern either. Again, smogability made the decision an non-issue for me.

dont take filter out the extra airflow will slow car down, unless tuned for it or computer learns it about 200 miles. i tried it.

Thanks, I was wondering about that. God, I miss the good ole days when a fella could pop open the hood, twist a couple of things.. and actually fix something. Damn Bill Gates and his computers - Damn 'em all to hell!

BTW, a side note:

Hey, I went to the Doctor today, he told me I had ADD. I mean he started off saying "Son, you have Attention Deficit (something, or other), blah, blah, blah... then a bunch of other stuff... Yada, yada, yada. It was really irritating cuz I was looking outta da window thinking when is this fool ever gonna shut up so I can go outside & play.

I know this has nothing to do with air filters, but I just thought it would be funny. Hell, it's cracking me up!

I have a Callaway Honker and highly recomend it. The engine breathes much better and cools faster. I've also notice a slightly deeper exhaust note (everything else on the car is stock; for the moment).

I called Callaway with a few technical questions and had them all answered by the end of the day in their return phone call. So I am pleased with their customer service.

The quality of callaways 'kit and package' is very good. Filter element, internal and exterior surfaces of the intake it self, cutting templet, instructions ect., everything was well made and accurate.

I do not have any hp numbers for you. Though I do notice the engine is more potient.

Hope this helped.

ive had the vararam on my C5 Z and now my 06 Z51 Coupe and absolutely love it. Throttle response has greatly increased on the highway and i could definitely feel a difference after the install on my SOTP meter. A dyno will never pick up any major hp increase with a ram air setup so other than 1/4 mile numbers any gain in hp #s are pretty much speculation.

I have the Vararam and it works well, the honker's fit/finish looks better but I rather have better performance over looks.

I personally observed 1/2hp with the Vararam on the dyno. But that doesn't mean anything because most of the horsepower gain develops when in motion, enhanced ram air concept. So you can only feel the power when you're accelerating rapid at higher speed. For some unknown reason, the Honker develops hp gains on the dyno, I believe as much as 10-13hp. Just keep in mine, the installation of both CAI could make a difference in horsepower also. Be extra careful with the installation of the Vararam. The shroud template for the cut out hole is too big. So, it would leave a lot of air space. Vararam needs to correct this problem. This could cause a lost of hp. Plus, you would have other crap force into the engine compartment. This particular shop had to structure their own shroud template so this problem would not recur. After observing the shop second installation of the Vararam on a C6, I would most definitely consider purchasing the Vararam, especially if I could get it at a discount. Again, it's a draw.
