Does anyone have any idea if current Z06 features
will filter down into the standard Vettes for 2008?
Specifically, I'm interested in the aluminum frame.
It would seem to make sense to amortize the
development & tooling cost for the aluminum frame
across the entire Corvette platform.
One problem with this argument is that GM
wouldn't want the standard Vette to end up lighter
than the Z06. As such, they would need to be
more aggressive in reducing Z08 weight.
Another interesting feature would be carbon fiber
body parts. The same tooling cost/amortization argument
holds here as well.
It's a pretty SAFE bet that you will NOT see an aluminum frame nor carbon fiber body panels on the base Corvette for 2008...nor for any year soon after that for that matter.
You can'y get the removeable roof with an aluminum frame. I wish I wasn't so darn cheap and got a Z06, but I do like taking the roof off in nice weather and you can't do that with a Z06.
The only thing I have heard is a 25 bhp bump with either a L76 Based 6.0L (LS3) or L92 Based 6.2L (LS8). These are the new truck engines that use DoD, VVT, and unported 15* versions of the LS7 Heads. The L76 is already available with a low-profile car intake in the Holden in Australia.
I am beginning to suspect that we may get the LS3 (425 bhp) as a base engine and the LS8 (465 bhp) as an optional engine. If this happens expect the Z06 LS7 to get a bump to 525 bhp with VVT.
No way would I want to pay the extra $ for carbon fiber skin. The paltry weight savings would never justify the cost IMHO. I'm sure insurance would go up too.
