on my new 06 a6 trans, when it is in park and at an idle, when i press the brake i hear a click coming from the shifter. i know it is a disengage for safety but are you supposed to hear it?

Its a Corvette, you're supposed to either have an ear shatteringly loud exhaust, or a multi-kilowatt stereo cranked to the point your ears bleed. Otherwise you might hear the little clicks as various relays perform their normal functions.
Seriously, if you have retained normal hearing, you should be able to hear the various system relays click when they perform their functions. I'm used to them and normally don't even consciously notice them working, but if I don't hear one when I expect to, my antennae go up and I wonder what's wrong.

It is the BTSI (Brake Transmission Shift Interlock) solenoid, which prevents shifting out of Park, unles the service brake is applied.
You all can thank Audi for this invention, due to their "unwanted acceleration issue or pedal misapplication issue" back in the 80's.
