Default oil pressure

new c6 (148 miles) digital oil temperature readout averages 235 degreees, while dashboard mechanicals show average oil temps of 195-200. Ignore higher number? go with lower#. any real reasons for difference....235 a little too high for my comfort zone. anyone with similiar experiences. this is my first weekend with car and every little thing makes me just a little bit more crazy. At the age of 64 i figure i'm crazy enough. Seriously, would appreciate any help (other than the obvious Prozac suggestions) thanks to all.......keep on keepin on!

It depends on your operating condition. If you are cruising at high speed on a hot day, 235 deg is probably about right for your oil temp.

Your dash gauge reading of 195-200 actually sounds a little cool for the oil temp...oil temp typically runs a little higher, say 15-20 deg, than coolant temperature once the engine temps stabilize. Coolant temps running anywhere from about 195, up to maybe about 215 and higher when stopped, are usual.

Your reading coolant temperature and it is normal and your oil temp is normal also.

The oil temp is available ONLY on the digital readout, anything on your dashboard is oil pressure or coolant (water) temp.

235 oil temp is a little high for most conditions but not unbearable. My car with Z51 oil cooler shows 221'F oil temp after cruising about 70 mph for an hour with outside air temp 75'F. Hope that helps.

It seems to take forever for the oil to reach it maximum operating temp in the 226 range way longer after the coolant temp is at 194.

The cooling system is designed to remove heat from the combustion chambers and cylinder heads, the hottest parts of the engine. The coolant is there specifically for removing combustion heat efficiently...i.e. it is designed to get hot quickly, and once operating temperature is reached, remove the heat to the radiator where it can be rejected to the atmosphere.

The oil system's primary purpose, on the other hand, is not to get hot. Unlike the coolant, the oil is not held in close contact with the hottest parts of the engine as long before it returns to the lower, cooler regions away from the combustion process. Slower increase in oil temp is to be expected.

It fits with seeing oil temperature reading on the dashboard mechanicals.

The original poster is confusing oil pressure with oil temperature.
