Default Passenger cabin air filter

How many of you have changed your passenger air cabin filter located right next to the battery? If so when you reinstalled it back in did you put it straight back in or did you angle it towards the top as you will see the plastic slots at an angle facing up?

The filter is flexible so that it will bend up to follow the slot. If it went staright in the air would not pass throught it before entering the car.

How does this system work? There is a hole beyond the filter cover compartment which way does the air flow? It is closed to the engine compartment so what is the flow route from interior to filter or from filter to interior? It's a pollen filter right to keep from breathing outside allergens etc.
I put it straight in as I saw it like that before I removed it. As you can read the letters "this side up" which is facing the engine. The filter is in the compartment flat so you can easily see those letters when you remove the cover. If the filter was installed at an angle into those plastic slots then you wouldn't be able to see those words straight on the filter.

You need to remove it again and check out what is happening. The filter bends up in the back so the air flow can flow down thru the filter and into the hole in the back that you mentioned. The hole in the back is into the air and heating unit. As I mentioned before if it did not bend up in the back the air would go straight into the hole and bypass the filter.

Cabin Air Filter
The air inside your vehicle may actually contain more pollutants than the air outside. That’s why ACDelco offers both carbon and non-carbon Cabin Air Filters to help keep pollens, fumes, smoke and other materials from reaching the inside of a vehicle. Carbon filters offer added protection thanks to a thin carbon layer that helps eliminate damaging vehicle exhaust pollutants like ozone, benzene, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. When changed regularly, our filters can help reduce wear on your vehicle’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system.

Here are more great reasons to use ACDelco

Advanced filter media technology helps keep pollutants out of the interior for more comfort
Highly durable and reliable
Can remove up to 99.5 percent of allergens from the air entering the vehicle’s ventilation system
12-month/12,000-mile limited warranty
ACDelco makes a cabin air filter designed to fit most of today’s vehicles

Maybe someone can engineer a slide mechanism that connects the engine air filter box to the firewall.

That way, when the carbon traps unglue themselves from the inside of your air intake, they will just slide right down to your cabin filter!

I tried to take them, but I could not get anything that looked useable. I am "camera challenged".

Maybe the shop manual will have a drawing.

I'd only change mine after two seasons as I only put ~10,000 miles per year on the car.

Well if you don't install it correctly what will happen?

You will get "unfiltered" air, I would assume. We lived for a longtime without cabin filters.

The real question is, what do you do when the roof blows off and all that unfiltered air gets in! We will need to wear masks like Micahel Jackson..........

Thus far I cannot tell by any airflow inside interior or odor. Everything seems fine.

REPLY: You wont filter all the air , but more importantly, the heating coil and cooling coil fins/tubes will get dirt on them which will cut down on their effectiveness and will reduce airflow to the cab.

When you look into the cabin filter compartment with filter out all I see is a opening further in that goes down so it must be that this filter covers it but it either covers it flat or at an angle as the two plastic indentions on each side would indicate. I think it just goes straight n flat in.

REPLY: No it doesnt go straight in ; look into the filter slot opening , then up at an angle. Youll see the curved filter rails that the filter slips into. The filter is designed to curve slightly as you push it in. If you pushed it in straight and missed the curved rails, then, the filter would be way too short youll find. The airflow comes down (on top of) the air filter then makes its way to the blower compartment which you can see if you look straight back.

I don't see how you can install it wrong. My post yesterday tells what happens when it is installed. If you have the correct filter which is very flexible, it will bend up as you push it in. If you force it something is wrong and pull it out. The air flow is down thru the filter and into the cabin.

So it does go in at an angle into there and does not sit on top level and flat of the inside hole. It will angle up if you follow those slots making the filter at an angle.
