I don't have a service manual for the C6 yet, anyone know what this plug on the bottom (driver's side) of the 6-speed manual is?
...and why it get hot enough to melt itself?
It was plugged in properly, just got hot enough to melt. I think I may have pinched a wire somewhere while reinstalling my drivetrain. Now with the key off, it sounds like my fuel pump is still circulating the fuel inside the tank. Fun!
Looks a lot like a coolant temp sensor to me. My CST-V has a rear diff temp sensor.. I haven't seen it but I'm betting it looks like your pic there. Can you monitor gearbox temp on your instrument panel? If so I'll bet thats what it is... or was.
No, it doesn't show the gearbox oil temp. But, you are probably right that it is a temp sensor. I wonder what could cause it to get so hot though? Unless I snagged a wire causing it to ground out.

Not all have it - - -
I was just under my '06 convertible (FE1 suspension) changing the lubricant to Royal Purple Synchromax, and the plug you show is not installed in my car.
Your profile shows the Z51 option, which includes a transmission cooler.
By the way, the service manual is not perfect - in the section for changing the lubricant in the manual transmission is says to install Dexron VI. But GM says NO DEXRON SIX IN THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION. Oh well.
Your thread has caused me to go out to the garage and jack up my Z51 to get a final answer to this temp sensor question. Two or three of us argued about this a while back...I claimed it was in the fill plug location like the service manual said...I was misinformed.
That is, indeed, the Z51 temp sensor. Having the service manual wouldn't have been any help...the location of the temp sensor has been changed since the text was originally written (and never revised). The service manual shows it as being installed in the fill plug, which is incorrect...the temp sensor now has it's own dedicated tapped hole in the bottom driver-side of the case.
You probably messed up the contacts in the plug when you re-installed the connector. Whatever caused a short circuit and fried the connector happened at the connector, not anywhere on the harness. You are probably looking at replacing the sensor as well, if the connector receptacle is boogered. I guess I'm surprised the circuit wasn't fused...you probably never would have found the problem if a fuse were blowing and the connector looked normal.
BTW, the tranny temp does not read out on the DIC. The only indication of tranny temp out of normal range is the MIL (malfunction indicator light or check engine light)...a DTC is set for low voltage (high temp) and for high voltage (low temp).

That's one more thing I love about the automatics, we have a trans temp readout.
Though with the hotter running automatics one might argue that it's far more necessary as well LOL.

LS1LT1, it seems like you were involved in that temp sensor location discussion. Someone was trying to illuminate my ignornance...if it was you, mea culpa; I have seen the error of my ways.

The automatic looks totally different with plug on bottom on drivers side.

No, I don't think I was actually but if so glad I could help LOL.

Yeah I figured it might be, I was merely stating some off topic type babblings LOL.

That is definitely the temp probe. Interesting though. On the T-56 in the C5 and C5 Z06 that temp probe is also the fill plug. But on the C6 it sure does look like the fill plug is the higher plug just over the Dexron III sticker.
I've never heard of one of those plugs melting from electrical problems either. I agree with JmpnJckFlsh and would replace the sensor as well as the temp probe connector. Good luck with your repair.
LS, i am going the RP route also in my A4. I put it in the diff. about a month ago and will be using the RP Max ATF for my fluid and filter change. There was a thread a while back about someone who used RP in their A4 and noticed an improvement in shifting, i have searched for about a half hour but can not find it. I'll let you know if there is any truth to that in about a week.
I have used RP in the diff. and things sound a bit quieter, i use RP Ice in the coolant and have noticed a major difference in temps. Not that their lower then normal but the temp range doesn't fluctuate as much. So i guess we'll see about RP in the A4. The reason i'm changing my trans. fluid is because i have almost 40,000 mi. of spirited driving on my C6.
I know i'm about to get bashed for this but i personally will never use Amsoil again, i personally had problems with it in my 2 stroke race boat and that experience has turned me off to using it ever again in anything.
As for Redline, i have only heard good things about their products but have never used them.
