Default C6 automatic trans question

I'm a long time Vette owner (from the 60s) and gearhead of sorts; and I'm starting to look into a C6. I've got a couple questions about these automatic transmissions........

First off, I see threads that address them as both A4s and A6s...... are there really two different animals or are some of these posts mistaken and it's really only an A6?

Secondly, how might an automatic on these new cars hold up to some fairly high torque/HP numbers? Say........ something in the neighborhood of 600 plus at the rear wheels?

I know it's simply a matter of building up the older ones (very straightforward really), but with all this new technology is it possible to get a reliable tranny to hold some pretty high numbers? Reliability would be a big deal to me as I'm pretty much past my hot rod days (on an everyday basis anyhow) but it's kind of fun to have a bunch on tap when you want it

I can only help with the first part of your question. An A4 is the automatic that GM used thru the 05 model, 4 speed automatic. The A6 was introduced on 06 as a six speed automatic with psuedo manual shifting via paddles on the steering whee.

The 2005 came with the A4 transmission. You had two choices the stock 2:73 setup or you could purchase the performance 3:15 fow a few hundred more. The 2006's have the A6 with paddle shifts.

Both are great transmissions. I like the nasty down shifts of the A4 my self but I would have been just as happy with the A6. I just didn't want to wait.

To partially answer your other question about building one up, the A4 can be built to hold 600rwhp easy. The A6 cannot at this point, but that's most likely because it's new and a little bit unexplored. I'm sure eventually it will be able to hold a ton of torque too.

Stock for stock, the A6 actually has a higher torque handling rating than the A4. The numbers were posted here somewhere, but I think it was 450 for the A4 and 470-490 for the A6.
