On they way home last night going 30 Mph the service active handling message displayed. The owners manual said to bring in for service.

Has anyone experienced this before and know what may be the cause.

Thanks
Dan

This happened to me a couple of times when I was making a tight U-Turn. It ended up being a defective steering wheel sensor. The dealer replaced it under warranty. I am not sure if this is related to your situation, but thought I would reply just in case.

Mine also did that intermittently when I first got it with the same "no problem" when I took it in. They finally found which sensor was bad and replaced it--no problems for a year now.

Shortly after buying my car, the light started coming on randomly. The first trip to the dealer resulted not being able to read any codes so they wouldn't fix it. The next time the light came on I drove to the dealer and made sure they did not turn off the car until the scanner was used. They were able to get a code and replaced the steering wheel sensor and the problem went away - for about a year. Today the light came on again, I drove to the dealer and showed them the light but they were too busy too look at it. So here it goes again - unplanned trips to the dealers when the light comes and hoping that a mechanic is free....

There's a bulletin out on this problem and it has to do with a wiring harness being a little too short. I believe the problem occurs mainly on cars with the telescoping steering column. When the tilt column moves up and down, it rubs the wires in the harness and causes the Service Active Handling message to show up on the DIC.

Does your car have the telescoping/tilt column? My car does and I've been seeing the message off and on now for about a month. It comes on from time to time when I start up and then goes away for a few days. Actually, I've been experimenting for the last week or so and I've found a pattern. If you're like me, you tilt the wheel up before getting out of the car. I've found that IF I get into the car and tilt the wheel down into driving position BEFORE I start the car, the message does NOT appear. On the other hand, if I start the car while the steering wheel is still tilted up, the message shows up every time. I now know what to do when I take it in to the dealership so that they can see the problem and hopefully get a code reading.

That thing about the wiring harness being too short sounds logical based on what I've seen so far.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.Funny thing is I set the tilt wheel when I got the car and haven't touched it since. Though it sounds like a logical explanation.Sounds like a big deal to fix.

quickride is correct. My problem was the column sensor but I believe it is the wire harness to the sensor. Mine would be fine until I pressed my memory button, as soon as the column moved the message popped up.

Took about two hours at the dealer

I agree with the others that the wheel position sensor is the most likely cause. However since you stated that you do not extend the wheel you might check the battery voltage. Every time my C6 sits for an extended period of time I get the "service active handling" message. All I need to do is charge the battery or drive it for awhile and it goes away. I have seen the message come on when the battery was only at 12.4 volts. Considering a fully charged battery is only 12.7 it doesn't seem to take much to make the light come on.

When checking the battery make sure that it hasn't been charged or started for awhile or you can load the battery then check it.

Mine did that once after 18 months of ownership. But luckily it went away after 5 seconds.
