GM is apparently pushing forward on this with the 3.6 V6 as well as the Ecotec. We have heard for a long time about designs/plans for it (as well as 3 valve heads) for the LS motors, but no word on when. Any of you "connected" folks or otherwise in the know people have any word on this?? The buzz about "Displacement on Demand" (or whatever they call it now) for fuel mileage pales in comparison to this sweet feature.
That's a good question and with GM's track record on incorporating new technology, I'll bet not until the next decade. What was needed for DI is less sulpher in the gas. Well it has been reduced to 20ppm this year and this target has been known for a while. So theoretically GM should have (and maybe they have) positioned their newer engines (e.g. 3.5L and 3.9L V-6s, LS-2 and LS-7) to be easily upgraded when the sulpher levels would allow it.
So now with the upcoming LS-3/9, it would be really no excuse for these engines not take advantage of DI and VVT. 3-valve heads would really be nice.
On a side note, the new BMW 335i is a twin-turbo with DI. It won't have the full lean burn mode (even better mpg) for the US models because even at 20ppm the sulpher levels are too high. In Europe the 335iuses full lean burn mode DI because sulpher levels are almost 0ppm.
