This is an undocumented fact not found in the C6 service manual, section 7. Supplement this to your documentation when changing your shifter:
Place the shifter in neutral. Press down the shift control neutral lock pin until it engages the transmission control rod. Test the shifter. The shift lever should not move. Remove the shifter. It may be necessary to remove the shift control neutral lock pin during this process. Regardless, remove it and reinsert it at a 180 degree rotation. Again depress the shift control neutral lock pin until the transmission control rod is immobilized.
Change shifters as instructed. Do not insert the upper short portion of the shift control neutral lock pin into the groove of the shifter. The shifter does not move because of 4 bolts. The transmission control rod is immobilized by the shift control neutral lock pin. Secure the bolts of the new shifter.
Remove the shift control neutral lock pin and store it in a safe place.
If the shift control neutral lock pin remains installed, even if attached properly to the shifter, it risks slipping down and locking the transmission control rod in a rearward direction. This results in the gear being locked in 1st, 3rd or 5th.
you have any pictures, what is this nuetral lock pin?
It look slike a bent allen wrench, in the I slot in the forward portion of the shifter assembly.
Aftermarkets use a thicker base with the enhanced throw below the mounting plate.
After install, the pin is worthless because it will not snug to the top of the I slot.
Personally, I do not know why it was even there in the firts place but after removing, I certainly wouldnt wantit jiggling around into the control arm linkage.
