Default Difference between PF46 and PF48 oil filter?

This question already exists in C6 General, but hidden within a post with different title. No answers yet.

Can someone describe the difference between the PF46 filter (as used on the LS2) and the PF48 filter (as reportedly used on the LS7)?

It has been reported that GM is now using the PF48 as opposed to the PF46 on the new 2007 LS2s... wondering why.

Thanks.

I don't think the PF46 has the "internal" bypass valve.

Thanks. Interesting. Supposedly the PF48 has a different thread pitch than the PF46 so they cannot be interchanged.

I really wonder why the new LS2 gets the PF48 instead of the PF46.

Filters that go on GM cars do not need an internal bypass valve, since GM puts the bypass directly on the oil filter base on the engine block.
