what does the sensor in the shroud (in front of the radiator) do???

Measures ambient air temperature....one of the factors utilized by the ECM.

Ambient air temp displayed and used by the HVAC unit among other things.

2006 owner's manual, page 3-28.

This sensor reads the outside air temperature and
helps to maintain the temperature inside the vehicle.
Any cover on the front of the vehicle could give a false
reading in the temperature.
