Default Mods and Legality (California)

Hey everyone,

First, I'd like to say that I'm a new member to these boards, though I've been lurking around the forums for a couple of months now, soaking up all the information and experience available here. It's a great resource.

Second, I've got an 07 Coupe due to be built and delivered sometime later this month or early September, and I've been looking at the various types of mods that are available. I'm curious, however, as to what I can legally get away with, without winding up with a ticket and big fines.

I read the thread about the exhaust, which basically says that headers and high-flow cats are not legal, so I've got that question pretty well answered, but I'm curious about some of the other mods.

Most specifically, I'm interested in the twin-turbo kits that I've seen around here, heads, cam, and other internal engine parts?

I figured, if nothing else, asking here would be a great place to start.

Some header might be Ok. Check for CARB approval. I had them on my motorhome and they were CARB approved and smog checks were never a problem.

I don't know about shorty headers, but Long tubes are definately non legal items based on a lot of recent empirical data. In CA for any mod to be legal, it must have a CARB number. Check with the mfg, they should be able to give you the CARB number/sticker if it is legal.

Agreed, none of the cams/heads and long tube headers are CARB legal.

At least one of the supercharger makers has applied for CARB approval (may have it by now). Generally, blowers and turbos can get CARB approval because they don't compromise the emissions systems on the car, in some cases, the car even winds up cleaner.
