Default Looking for around 400rwhp

I recently bought a 2006 couple MN6.
I am looking for options to get about
400 rwhp along with approx how much
it will cost. I only have about 200 miles
on her.

I am over in Afghanistan and should be
home in a couple months. I live in
Melbourne, FL and looking for a reliable
shop in the area.

Any help/information to get around that
rwhp would be appriciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I think that headers, X-Pipe, catback, cold air Intake, Dyno tune, ported heads and LSx Intake fast should get you around 400 rwhp

Good luck with your deployment and stay safe. When you get home give Mike Norris, Next Level Performance, in Altemonte Springs a call
(407-869-7223).

He owns one of the best vette shops in the state and is probably one of the best tuners in FL.

IMHO, a catback will improve the sound, won't give you any HP gains. Ported heads and FAST intake are good if you're also planning to get an aftermarket cam, but not many guys are willing to spend the $$$ otherwise.

A few other mods that can give you more power are an underdrive pulley, and a low-temp thermostat, especially if combined with adjusting the fans during your tuning. Another possibility is a ported throttle body, but again, the gains will not be as dramatic as they would be with an aftermarket cam.

A 100 shot of nitrous will do it for sure. Lots cheaper per hp gained than mufflers and air cleaner housings too.

My best dyno run was 396/383 SAE on a dynojet. Wort run was 393/380 SAE. I'm adding a ported intake in the near future with a more aggressive tune for 93 octane since I'm moving to Florida in 2 months. Hopefully a consistent 400rwhp will be the result. Current mods are in my sig.

Depends on how much money you want to spend. For 400rwhp I think the best route would be head/cam/headers. I went the all bolt on route and am at 386rwhp, could have saved some money skipping a few items and just going head/cam from the gate.

Anyone in California,Orange Co. that knows of a good performance tuner. I tried installing the Diablosport and could not. The Part # was wrong and had to do a lot of BS to maybe get it to work.

A good perf. tuneup will do the same. Anyone know how well the cold air vortex that runs $500+ works?

Air cleaners and exhausts do nothing for power.

IMO, the cheapest route if you want to ensure at least 400RWHP is heads & cam plus tune. It will cost about $5K including the tune and install. A&A out here in SoCal says they can guarantee at least 415RWHP from just this.

Sure, bolt-ons look cheaper initially, but you can nickel and dime yourself to death and never reach 400. CAI+headers+tune already will cost $3.2K including install and most are only at 375 or so, give or take a couple of ponies. Then you're throwing on FAST intakes and other stuff to try to hit the magic 400 and you still may not get there. Sure, there are 1 or2 guys that got 390 from the headers/intake/tune, but they are exceptional.

Labor on a cam is high, so you may as well throw some new heads on there while you're at it.

Also, you need to know what it is you're after. If you want HP bragging, then the above is good. If you want speed, then a better way to go is stock power, sticky tires, and gears. The 400 RWHP does you no good if you can't get it to the ground. Just look at the poor 0-60on the Z06 relative to its power for proof of that.

Yes, I agree, but how many people do heads/cam without headers/CAI? Any? If so, what are the benefits? Are the heads/cam packages severely limited by breathing without an upgraded exhaust and CAI?

My baseline was 354 HP. I went to 397 HP after the following mods:

Calloway Honker
160 degree thermostat
LG headers
MTI Racing plug wires
MTI Racing tune

Very noticeable SOTP difference.

What size gears are you talking about? 390's or 410's

Severely, no. Some, yes.

I was answering the original question, which was what was needed for 400. H&C will get him there with the most certainty. So if that is all he wants, then there is no point spending another $3K on CAI + headers.

CAI may get you another 5-10 with the package above. If you must have CAI, then you can do a cheap one by doing the flip-over mod for the stock airbox. This mod is definitely worth doing. $500 for some fancy piping, is not IMO (this coming from someone who has a Vortex rammer sitting in a closet).

To do headers or not is the main issue. Headers seem to be good for 25 RWHP when combined with the heads+ cam+tune. That ain't much for the extra $1,800 - $2,200 these will cost including install. Plus they fail visual for smog automatically in urban areas and anywhere in states like Oregon, Cali, or NY. So for people like me, they have no appeal. But individuals need to make their opwn decision here.

I don't mean to sound flippant, but I don't care what packages others use, and others should not do this either. Sure, a given package chosen by X dude may be interesting to note as a reference, but every car / driver need / situation is different and there is no magic bullet package. X-dude's tolerance for idle lope, exhaust noise, or drivability may be totally different from yours. Some guys think the maggie sounds great at WOT... to me it sounds like a bone saw. I personally like some cam lope, my buddy can't stand it if it doesn't feel stock.

What I am getting at is: do not copy packages cited by others in the forum - heck, you don't even know if the poster even really has that package or is even old enough to drive. Instead, select a reputable tuner in your area, have a consultation with him/her to determine objectives and costs, and go for it. A good tuner will not only provide optimum performance for the mods selected, but will also suppot you after the fact. And the more you mod, the more post-support you will need

All you need to do is put a good set of headers on it... Preferably American Racing or Kooks, I'd recomend 1 7/8. X pipe with high flow cats, Callaway Honker intake, Underdrive pulley, and a cam. That should get you to around 420-430 rwhp.

your car is pretty consistent...that's just statistical variation and weather factors you're seeing affecting the ~3hp/tq numbers.
