Problem Solved - Noise like marbles in a can
The problem is described in Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #050495001 (NHTSA #10018743). Information from GM can also be found in their document ID #1796468.
The problem is caused by overtightening of the nut during the manufacturing process. GM discovered the problem in November 2005 and issued the TSB. As luck would have it my car was manufactured on November 5, 2005.
The problem is caused by the driveline support, rear prop shaft coupling nut being loose. This allows the hub to move on the flexplate spindle.
The mechanic found GM PIP3764 for a loose propellor shaft coupling nut. The solution was to remove the transmission and torque tube. Remove the nut to clean the threads and reinstall. Of course, the mechanic found threads that were damaged / stripped and therefore had to replace the spindle and nut, the transfer bearings and reinstall the transmission and torque tube.
I took the car in last Friday and it was ready by noon today. I have to give everyone at BOARDWALK CHEVROLET in REDWOOD CITY an A+ in customer service. Joe Cabral the head of service listened to my concerns and, when I picked up the car today, made an extra effort to find me and talk with me about the car and the problem. Dave, the lead Corvette mechanic took the time, when I brought the car in for service last Friday, to listen to my concerns and to assure me that he would honor my request concerning the care of my car while it was in their hands. Alex, the fellow who wrote the work order, kept in touch with me by phone almost daily and called me as soon as the car was done. I was very impressed with their overall level of mechanical expertise and with the level of customer service that I received. It's not easy to find good car care, I would recommend Boardwalk to anyone here in the SF Bay Area who needs to have service performed on their Corvette.
As for GM . . . Hey! I didn't buy a Ferrari. Stuff happens. I was one of the unlucky ones who had the problem. Although I will sleep easier tonight knowing that I have 6+ years left on my extended warranty plan.
Has anyone else out there experienced this problem?
Forum Administrator . . . Can you please post this thread to other areas on the Forum where Corvette owners who are experiencing this problem can find it?
Thanks again to all on the Forum who responded to my orignal post.
