Default steering wheel removal

I posted this is the general section but didn't get any traffic on it so I'll try it here.

I just ordered a new two tone steering wheel from Downsouth Vettes. I know some of the other places insist you talke the car to the dealer to have the wheel installed.

Has anyone installed their own steering wheel ? I am very mechanical (just installed a power steering unit on my 39 Ford coupe) - is this a hard thing to do or is it just because of the airbag ?

It's the air bag. Around a year ago a member posted some pic's of his C6 at an audio store and they set off the air bag. The explosion forced the installer out the open door and onto the ground. The car had to be taken the the dealer to put in a new air bag.
I would ask Gerardo at Downsouth how he does it.

Default wheel

there's also a GUY on here who swapped the 05 wheel for an 06 wheel and posted direction and pictures.Try the search function, something like 06 wheel in 05 ...here's part of it from leolfuse
2006 air bag issue resolved!
For those interested in swapping their 2005 steering wheel to a 2006 steering wheel, I figured out how to get the airbag to work. Besides purchasing the 2006 steering wheel (P.N. 15806311) and the 2006 airbag (P.N. 15782157), you also need to purchase the 2006 clockspring coil kit (P.N. 19133742)

The clockspring pictured here:

has the correct connectors that plug into the back of the 2006 airbag.

Do not attempt to simply swap the connectors by snapping the plugs apart. The shape and type of pin is not compatable with the 2005 plugs. It is a simple task to replace the entire clock spring coil. It plugs into the steering column harness pictured here:

You will need to slightly dremel the lip of the steering consol trim to prevent the 2006 steering wheel from rubbing. You can't see this part of the trim with the steering wheel installed. Another pic:

Futher questions please post.
