You dont need to remove it, you just need to move it out of the way. Slightly less work, but same idea.
It is only held on by 2 bolts. Disconnect the PS lines, end links and the 2 bolts holding the rack in place.
Also, in order to see the timing mark on the crank, the damper must be removed, but first you must remove the oil pump. It's a little bit more work than the C5, but the end results are better
If you get stuck shoot me a PM, I'll give you my number...
WELL DAVE, I THINK YOU"VE GIVEN ME ALL THE INFO I NEED IT CONFUSED ME AT FIRST OF DROPPING THE STEERING RACK, I'VE DONE A FEW CAM SWAPS IN THE PAST. THANKS FOR THE INFO I APPERCIATE IT
Search for harmonic balancer and you will get some info that helped me. Search crank pulley bolt in c6 forums as well. If you pull the bolt you should replace it because it needs to be torqued beyond reason to insure that it does not back out. Alternative would be loctite and pinning it when you reinstall. Actually, pinning is a good idea even if you replace the bolt.
I wonder what rocket scientist/engineer decided to eliminate the key way in the crank snout and instead decided to try to keep the balancer from spinning with the bolt. When one of these things comes loose at speed it will go right through the side of the car.
I have actually seen a balancer in a race car come off due to a broken crank snout and go though a chrome moly frame rail. It was last seen (but never found) going under the guard rail and heading into a corn field adjacent to the track.
