A6 GHL Sound Clip
Install of 05 generic GHL's ( 2 can ) on a 06 A6 Coupe.
Curious if those ( Greenhorn, Greentank, any other colors !! ) can comment how different the one can A6 specific units may sound.
Cold start idle, rev to 4000RPM, hold at 1500RPM, rev to 2500RPM, improved idle sound, then shut down. They sound better after they heat up.
All that I read, leads me toward believing that there is not much difference in sound, drone, burble, etc.

Had a problem uploading to "Photobucket", tried a new site "Dropshots", very simple to use....drag and drop to upload

I MAY be able to do even better.....Brian may send me a demo original system (like yours) to compare, and from there I'll order which one I like better.

Recorded with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7. First time used in a video mode !!! It was about a foot off the floor and three to four feet from the tail pipes. I was surprised with the quality achieved !!!
That would be great....really would like to see how much improvement with the A6 specific system. GHL is a great product, amazing design and fabrication compared to competitors systems

Although sound clips can be a bit deceiving; and my single can system is just about 24 hours old, I would say they are quite similar. If anything my system may have a bit "deeper" sound at idle. This may change, however, as my system seasons.
OK...try this link...

woohoo! it works. nice call on the dropshots.
Mine doesn't have the same bass in the recording that yours does, but trust me, its there.
Sounds like the tone is very close, but I'm hearing that yours is stronger/louder at higher RPMS. We'll see when I get the two-can system on.
Also, regarding Greenhorn's comment about the deepness - I think it may depend on what kind of sound system you're listening on.....at work yours sounded on the tinny side...but at home where I have a subwoofer, they sound great.

To me idle is about identical. I notice you have a "burble" or popping when you let off the gas. I can only replicate this on deceleration, not while I'm revving in park or neutral.
Whatever GHL has done hasn't had any drastic impact on the muscle car sound !!!
Good Point !!!!
I have a subwhoofer on my way too expensive computer but I believe it is currently off (the little woman doesn't like it).
I will listen again tonight with the subwhoofer on.
Vs. Rt. 66 (exhaust only)
I only got to listen to it while the car was parked, so I heard it rev outside, and rev inside. The Rt. 66 seems a tad quieter to me, smoother, less "gutteral". They're both nice systems, but I prefer the GHL tone. They both had "burble", but the GHL A6 was more pronounced to my ears. While I didnt get to ride in the car, there was no perceived drone at all at 1500, though this was an M6 setup, and the car was not under any load.
Vs. Rt. 66 (w/ headers and a cam)
The drone is definitely much stronger in this setup. The Rt. 66 was on an M6, with a medium cam and Melrose headers. There was probably 1.5x to 2x the drone of my system at 1500 RPM. I can see how that would bother you on a long trip. The sound of this rt. 66 system outside, however, is very good. There is a deep rumble at idle, like far off thunder...which I'm sure is due alot to the cam.
Vs. Bullets (er....oh yeah, with cam, headers, and maggie - 467 rwhp on a C5 coupe)
Uhm....well, now I really know what bad drone is. This was a beast, and from 1400-2200 rpm there was bone-jarring drone. If this drone is a "10", then drone in the GHL A6 system is a 2, maybe a 2.5. The drone in the Rt. 66 with the headers and cam would be around a 4, but only at that dreaded 1500 rpm zone.
Overall, I found out two things today.
1) The GHL A6 "drone" is not even CLOSE to that of bullets, and significantly better than a modified Rt. 66 system (headers, cam). I also have realized that I have to try GHL's straight through original system to see if I can get more sound out of it - my exhaust sounds too quiet now! (but, it is a tad louder than the Rt. 66 on a stock car.
2) I will NOT be happy now until I have 450 rwhp (I'm sure my mechanic will be happy to read this post). The C6 I drove in that had a cam and headers, around 390 rwhp, and was definitely more powerfull than mine, but it didnt seem CLOSE to the 467 hp blown car. Now I see why the C6Z blows people away - man, what a rush that acceleration is....a tad dangerous too, I must say, but we're all carefull right? But...hmm, I leased the car.....I really shouldnt start plowing big bucks into it....should I?
So, the GHL A6 system is definitely has control, relatively, of the drone. It's there, though subdued, and will be noticeable to anyone just putting the system on who has never had an aftermarket exhaust before. However, I dont really hear it anymore, and I'm NEVER suffering from ringing ears, headaches, etc. I drive with the paddles alot, so I'm rarely near that range anyway. Lastly, since the transmission is tunable now, youll be able to switch the shiftpoints to keep the rpm above the 1500 level if you want (I plan on making my "S" mode shift into 6th at 85+). I would definitely recommend the system to A6 owners who want an exhaust that is slightly louder and a bit more raw than the Rt. 66. The Rt. 66 is a good sounding system too, with a more refined, smoother sound.
One of these days I'll take a video camera to the shop on a weekend and sample everyone that shows up.

Good write up !!!
BTW, my GHL's for the A6 passed the "acid test".
Although we have Corsa and Borla equipped LS2's in the hood, my better half can distinguish the sound of my car coming down the street and into our 100' inclined driveway from anywhere in the house when she is awake and alert. When she is sleeping, however, the same sound does NOT wake her up (an asset if there ever was one).
Again, thanks for all the ongoing research regarding comparable systems. I will be looking forward to any future observations you may care to share.
Sound, well it now sounds like a Vette should sound. Have not had it on a long trip but so far when you speak of drone its relative to your perception of what a after market exhaust should sound like and other systems on the market. Bottom line this was the right decision for me, like some one above stated on a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate the drone at 1 to 1.5 if that's what one wants to call drone. One other thing the weight of the system is a little more than half of the stock system and when you look at it from the back the space between the quad tips is like a mirror.

Actually the A6 model for the C6 is $1249. As far as why so much more than the C5, I really don't know. Maybe the two-can C5 design is easier to fabricate than the one can design. I guess it's what people are willing to pay. I just got mine, and it looks awesome. The stainless can and the tips look great, awesome workmanship. Should have it installed on Monday, can't wait!

Enjoy!
Amazing how GHL tends to be overlooked by C6 owners in favor of Corsa or BB................I don't think any of the competitors come close to the fit and finish of the GHL's. Welds aren't even noticeable and the polish on the whole system is amazing...
