Just take it off. Remove the water pump first and it's not bad if you have a set of ratcheting wrenches. I've done this a bunch of times and I can't remember if one of the bracket bolts goes into the block. Either way, just take it off and get it out of your way. When you go to put the head back on you dont want that thing hangin off the front to jam you up.
It looks like the Alternator and Power steering pump share the bracket. Are you saying the water pump needs to be removed too?
Its not explainable until you get to that one bolt. It will come off with the water pump on, but you can only turn it about 1/8 of a turn at a time. With the water pump off, you can turn it about 1/4 at a time.
Either way, yes the alternator bracket will have to come off. Changing heads sucks.
Neither side is hard, it just a pain in the ***. Scraping off the old gaskets and cleaning out the bolt holes takes a while and you must do them perfectly, too tedious for me. I rather do a cam swap even though it takes a while longer.

You are in Jersey! Jeeze man why didn't you say so. I can help you with a swap. Where are you? By the way don't use the GM bolts again. Spring for ARPs.
The trick with the stock bolts is to draw a line from the center of the head of the bolt to the top edge of the bolt like a clock at 12 oclock and turnt the number of degrees they are speced for.
If Aintqik is comming then so am I to check all his mistakes and next week is out since we have to do my clutch slave cylinder first.

Ok, sound strait forward. What degrees should they be turned? Anyone ?

My mistakes? Who put your slave back on? LOL!!!! You know I'm the best dang wrench you know... betta recognize
That was what I needed. So I took the heads off, did a port and polish. Put her back together and all is running great !!
What has changed:
- DIY Port and polish. I have done this before on other cars.
- SLP 1.85 rockers, springs & retainers.
- Dynotech 1-7/8 headers and cats.
- Vararam
- HPTuners DIY narrow band O2 tune
The car simply flies!! I would say she has 50-80 more HP. I did have a scare when she started to run rough after a few min. But it turned out to be a loose spark plug wire!
