Default Loose Axle Retaining Nut?

I first noticed a weird sound at slow speeds when I went to the ALMS race at Road America, didn't think much of it. I must have put on 1,000 miles since then. Today, I removed the tires to clean the inside of my rims, and when I took off the right rear tire, I heard a noise like something else came off...it was my axle retaining nut! It was totally loose, the treads are smooth and the nut glides well, compared to the threads on the left, where rust is starting to show.
Also, there was very uneven tire wear on my right rear compared to the left.
I re-tightened it to the best that I could with the tools available and the noise went away (Nowhere near what the torque specs probably are), but do you think it'll be covered under warranty if I take it to the stealership? I'd like to get the suspension and driveshaft checked out, but I've got 50,000 miles on it!
Kinda makes me worried about what could have happened.

Any advice would be appreciated.

50,000 miles on a C6? Wow!
Your profile doesn't say anything about your car- was this supposed to go into the C5 section?

Either way, the basic warranty is 36 mo/ 36k miles, so you're officially screwed unless you bought an extended warranty. If you have a good relationship with your dealer, they might cut you a discount on the work but that's rather rare.

It's an '05 C6 vette bought in March of 2005 with z51 package. What can I say, I've been enjoying it!
Yes, I do have an extended warranty, but the question is which person to take it to. The dealership here in Rockford IL doesn't handle too many vettes.

What kind of work has been done in the past (I can check your warranty history if you want)? That nut should never come loose. That retaining nut also holds the hub together for that wheel. When those nuts are left loose the hub can come apart. I would at least get that hub replaced.

Hey, I'm right down the road from you (Crystal Lake).
You must REALLY be enjoying the car, we've put on 11k miles in 5 months and thought it was a lot!
My experience is that the basic talent of the tech who works on your car, is more important than how many 'vettes he's worked on. Of course the best combo is a quality tech with a lot of Corvette experience.
In McHenry, Gary Lang Auto has one guy (Len) who does most of the Corvette work, and I'm happy with him. But I've never had a major repair done there, just little warranty stuff. You might start another thread asking about good dealer work closer to home.
Cheers!
