Does the CEL have to be on for the vettes computer to record any info, good, bad or otherwise,in the motor.I heard a real funny noise on startup yesterday, and I don't know if it was the motor, although it sounded like it was coming from there,or a loose pipe under the car...it went away, anyway, but was it recorded??Thanks.
Doesn't have to be, but usually is. There are four different sorts of data retained by the computer: pending codes, "thrown" codes, snapshot data and statistics. A pending code is one that doesn't turn on the light, usually a problem that might be there. A "thrown" code is one that turns on the light, either solid or blinking. In some cases when there's a code, either pending or "thrown", snapshot data (what was happening at the time) is recorded. Statistics include things like cylinder misfire history and bank long term fuel trims.
In many cases, pending codes will turn on the light if they happen a given number of times.
In any case, you can use a code reader to see what's there - in some cases pending codes or statistics can be used to see a possible problem; for example if one cylinder has a high misfire rate it could indicate a problem there. But without knowing what actually happened there's no way to know if there's a record.
Unfortunately, it doesn't record event or audit logs like a computer system, where you could just look at all the data as of a particular time. To do that you need to have a scan tool already connected and monitoring the live data stream; most of these have capture modes where they can save a few seconds worth of data around the time you push a "capture" button.
Thanks! It couldv'e been something as simple as my engine cover hittin something, because I moved it a little.(the thing that says corvette ls2 on it).Having heard anything since.
