What would happen if a Z06 rear CV joint would break on a power shift say from first to second at high RPM? I have read of some problems with CV joints and was just wondering how the car would react if it happened.
I just broke mine....
the left cv snapped...
it pulled hard.. to the left and was hammering....
but no damage...
650hp and new tires bfgs....
I havnt heard anything about bad cv shafts....
mine broke because I play to much..
don't you love the smell of burnt rubber and nos in the morning.....

Here is a detailed thread with pics and reports from quite a few owners who've broken CV joint housing covers, almost always the right side. Fix is a swap of the entire axle shaft.
As of a couple months ago, there were 90 reported incidents of C6Z CV joint housing cover failures. Chevy has release four different axle shafts in MY 2006, trying to fix the problem. The lastest one, P.N. ends in 1870 has had no failures reported on that thread. And quite a few folks are making passes at the drags with it on DR and bolt-ons without breakage.

Are these 1870 half-shafts directly interchangeable with the regular C6 half-shafts?

If you break a CV joint it will be replaced with the latest part by the dealer under warranty, assuming the car's rear wheel wells aren't deeply coated with track rubber.
Since my focus is the C6Z, I'm uncertain as to whether the axle shafts are interchangeable with those on a C6 coupe/vert. I suspect the answer is yes, but that needs confirmation.
On the C6Z some guys are going to C5Z axle shafts instead of the 1870, because the C5 part is stout and its CV joint cover (a different design from the C6Z) isn't breaking.
On the C6Z both axle shafts carry the same part number. But the CV joint housing cover is the offending subsystem, wherein the housing casting is failing. When examined closely it appears that the casting has been thinned as part of weight saving efforts. But the force on the right side can be too much under certain conditions, such as wheel hop.
If you want more details, you'll need to read the thread/link I posted above. Wouldn't want to spoil the story by providing Cliff Notes here.
