Default DIY Headers Install

Does anyone have some good step by step instructions with photos on installing headers. I will be installing mine this weekend. Unfortunately, I have no access to a lift, so I guess I'll be using jack stands.

sorry, no pics.

take you time, don't rush.
take the time to set-up your work enviroment.
disconnect the negative battery cable.
remove fuel rail covers.
remove plug wires.
disconnect the o2 sensors (just unplug the connectors, leave the sensors installed).
drop the mid-section (h or x) pipe.
unbolt and remove the dipstick tube.
unbolt and remove the existing exhaust manifolds, drop them out the bottom of the car.
remove the o2 sensors (label them for side and position front/back).
install the front o2 sensors into the headers.
position the headers in place, bringing them up from under the car.
position the header to head gasket, use two bolts to hold everything in place.
reinstall the dipstick tube, do not bolt in place yet.
install and tighten the remaining header bolts.
bolt down the dipstick tube.
connect the front o2 sensors, becareful to route them away from the headers, tie them back.
install and connect the rear o2 sensors, route the wires away from heat sources.
connect the rear section of the x/h pipe, let the front section hang down a bit (do not use the rear hangers yet).
lift the front of the x/h pipe and match it up with the collector and connect.
connect the rear midsection hangers.
push up and down on the midsection, retighten any and all bolts/clamps.
install the plug wires.
reconnect the battery.
start her up, let her idle for a few minutes (2+), shut her down, let her cool, recheck all your bolts.
start her up, take her for a drive, 50+ miles, bring her back. recheck all bolts and retorque as required.

The most difficult part will be wrenching on a car up on jackstands! I know this doesn't sound like a lodgical sequence, and I installed my set of DynaTechs Headers first, but, the mating of all the exhaust components is pretty close. If I had to do it again, I'd install the X-pipe first, then the intermediate pipe (the ones with the O2 bungs), then the cats. Don't tighten anything and slip the headers into place. Bolt the collectors, loosely to the cats before you bolt the headers to the engine, then final fit the headers to the engine, and bolt them up. You should now have everything connected loosely. Start at the front and align all the parts as you tighten everything up. The reason for this sequence is the install needs approx 2 inches of front to back space to allow for the slip fit joints, and if the headers are secured in the front, and the mufflers are prevented from moving rearward because of the rear most crossmember, then there is no room. I hope this makes some sence. You'll understand more when you actually get involved with the install and under the car. Good luck.

Slip fit headers are a little different. You have to make sure that the pieces slide together easy. I was almost done last night when the drivers side wasn't quite round enough to fit into the cat and the other side came loose. I ended up leaving it for tonight if I get a chance. Might finish until Sat. I'm using the Melrose Smoothflow. The extensions are very long and I will most likley pull them back up out of the way and use zip ties to hold them.

Yep; whether you think you'll need it or not, rent an exhaust-pipe expander from auto parts store if *all* of your pipes do not go together very easily. Much easier working under car and aligning things when pipes slide freely as opposed to wrestling with em.
