It's my understanding that 5th & 6th gears are essentially overdrive gears on the A6. If that's the case, is there anyway to prevent the transmission from making these last 2 shifts short of using the paddles? I purposely opted for the A6 transmission and have no complaints about it at all. Despite this, I've wondered why there isn't a way to keep the transmission from shifting into overdrive while maintaining the ability to automatically shift from 1st through 4th gears. I like the A6, but would also like to ability to drive around town in 4th and not have to manually downshift or, consciously shift into 1st each time I come to a stop. With the 1-4 skip shift eliminator available for the M6, I'm surprised something like this isn't available for the A6.
Only way I know is to accomplish this would be to use the paddles to stay in 4th gear, then when you come to a stop, move the gear selector up to D, then back to S.

I dont understand why you would want to do this? It seems as if when you are just driving around town you want better milage ... i.e Overdrive...
Mileage isn't really an issue for me. On occasion, I'd like the to have the power and acceleration of 4th gear available without the need to use the paddles or manually downshift to 1st when I come to a complete stop. It would also be an option for guys with A6 automatics who want a performance exhaust and don't want to buy Corsa exhaust systems to avoid the drone you get a low speeds with the transmission in 5th or 6th gears. I know this can all be accomplished with the paddles, but it would also be nice if you had the option of using 4 or 6 gears in true automatic mode.
Probably the best way to deal with it is to avoid thinking about "normal gearing" vs "overdrive". Just look at the tach, if you want more rpm to keep the engine in the "sweet spot" for sudden acceleration, use paddles as necessary and don't worry about what gear number is showing. But, be prepared to burn more gas and more oil. Sometimes a LOT more.
I agree with the poster of this thread. The A6 does shift into 5th and 6th gear far to early in my opinion. At times, if I am not in paddle mode (not very often) when attempting to accelerate fast the computer chooses a gear that is far too low for the speed I'm going and the RPM's hit 5000 upon downshift! Major programming flaw in my opinion. Because of this, I seldom drive without being in paddle mode.
You can use HP Tuners software to program the shift points for each gear in the A6. You could just set a high MPH shift point for 5th and 6yh gear. I did it and it works just fine.
I really don't see any problem with how it is programmed. Unless you are driving like you are in James Bond movie or something. Even then if you get on it hard it is going to downshift and not shift again until you hit the redline. Non issue really.
