There are few, if any, pros. Cons are that it could void your warranty.

Popular mod on the C5, but no gains and some problems noted when done on the C6. Also expensive to replace the MAF.

Howdy!

AFAIK, The screens are supposed to reduce turbulence so that the airflow can be metered better. I know there were some folks who removed them in older C5's and got inconsistent readings from the MAF when using a scantool.

Though in later C5's - like my Z (I *think*), the screen was removed, but I'm sure there was some complimenting MAF/electronic changes as well. Personally, I'd leave it alone

Lot of discussion on the f-body forums, and a lot of thrown engine codes and lessened performance. Also, many who claim a 5hp improvement, sop, etc. Personally for me too, I have never taken it off. Chevy didn't put them on to decrease performance but to balance it.

Reducing turbulance was a theory/rumor. Lingenfelter has a 100mm TB with no screen and it has no turbulance. The MAF is the same model used on the Z06-C5 and there is no issue.

There arent inconsistent readings either. If you run the new Lingenfelter MAF or remove the screen on this car, you get additional airflow and that is a plus. The removal of the screen requires you to adjust/tune the MAF table as you do in a VE tune. Once that is done, the car runs perfectly. Getting rid of the MAF altogether gets you 20rwhp but requires the car to run in speed density all the time. No turbulance issues in that case either. Combilned with all the other mods that are labeled "worthless" (ported TB, UD pulley, ported intake manifold, EWP) you can pick up 20-30rwhp.

I removed it on my C5 and the scans were not inconsistent. They were didfferent since the amount of airflow reported was increased....since it increases airflow. You input the C5 Z06 table and you had a perfect smooth running car as I have.

Ahh good info that clears that up! I knew my C5Z did not have MAF screens, so I was curious as to how different things could really be, other than the particulars of the tune.

(I think there was also some overlapping issues with various intake systems, that muddled the info regarding the MAF itself).

Definitely sounds like you need a tune vs. just yanking it out, but isn't that the case with just about everything?

SD tunes always sound like great setups (heard some amazing idle quality on big cams), though I had a SD setup on my Supra, and it had to be tweaked as other "external" factors changed.

Again, great input!
