Ahhh....can't say enough good things. It helps to have a sound knowledge on the workings of motors and sensors. I've had it for 3-4 years now. There is a definite learning curve. I've seen some buy it and learn just the very basics and get what they need out of it, some buy it and don't stop learning(me) about it and develop and OCD with it, and others get it, get overwhelmed and use it as a glorified data logger.
Have patience, and lots of it. I got mine and it sat on my desk in my office here at home until(2-3mos of reading forums) I felt I was confident enough to plug it in and understand how to log and understand data. I logged data for 3 mos just understanding how a car reacts to temps,KR,throttle inputs, etc.
Fast forward to present day and I've tuned roughly 35-40 cars and am very very proficient in SD tuning.
Give it time and be willing to accept that you don't know everything, and then when you think you might, know that your not even close.
i had it with my 2002 z06 and i loved it. i got tired of paying 200 to 300 bucks per tune and it not be right. there is a learning curve and i still dont know everything. i see they raised their prices quite a bit too. make sure to get the enhanced version also. you will want that with a wide band sensor.
Just bought it myself and I am amazed at all it can do, and it's pretty user friendly.
Gtodoug, I'm hoping to follow in your footsteps. I'm planning to do some dragstrip logging tomorrow and trying to understand what I'm looking at.
I've noticed that even simple changes easily done such as CAGS elim, reducing timing pulled based on IAT, and adjusting fans have made a pleasant difference in how my car drives. Clearing codes is very handy too. And I've got a lot more to learn.
I think the software is worth every penny, but don't be cheap like me and skimp on the version that can do standalone logging and wideband input. I'm sure I'm going to add this later at a higher cost.
I have HPtuners and would never go back to LS1 edit. The scan tool alone was worht the purchase. I have never used EFI live but have seen it in use and can say it is powerful too as a tuning tool. I would think it is just as competent but since HP made it to the market already and we are still hearing deadlines come and fall with the still unfinished EFI live, why would you wait? HP tuners is awesome and I'm sure will be fine as with future cars you get too. I shrugged off most of the things that were billed as better with EFI live.
HPtuners has an auto tune feature due out soon so it will be ahead of the game as far as features at that point. I will stay with it. Im a happy customer and Keith from HP has PM'ed me more than once unsolicited and has made tuning suggestions.
If you were closer, I would let you play with it on your car. When you do get it, feel free to PM for tuning info. I will stay on the phone and walk you through it the first time so you can get a jump on the tuning learning curve.
