Vararam = closest thing to a true ram air system IMO

Now stop and think for a moment; Say you're going 100mph and have an air intake that is unobstructed by a filter element. If so, then you have a ram air effect. But since it would be stupid to run your car without a filter element we don't. So when all this high speed ram air is in motion and hits the filter element that removes dirt particles by having very small holes to allow only the smallest particles to pass, in effect the ram air effect is GONE. It's snake oil. You can't even test for it on a dyno because the car isn't moving forward. Buy yourself a stinger, blackwing, or even these CAI's; there good filters there just not really RAM air, because of the filter. If your're expecting Big HP gains from an air intake, you'll be very dissapointed. HP comes from air distribution to cylinders ie. manifold, cam, and heads, and air evacuation from the cylinders, ie cam, heads, and headers.

Here are my Vararam install instructions and results. I have the time slips to prove the improvements I note herein.

Here's a write up:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1434941

I now have HP Tuners and I can log (and can produce such logs) and watch my IAT's drop quickly when the car starts moving and watch the o2's go lean as my speed gets over 60 or so. I really thought it was hocus pocus too until I installed it and I've seen the actual results. They are good products, just don't drive into standing water.

who runs a filter at the track. even with a filter as long as it keeps the plenum full and no air backs out it is a ram air

I know of a few people who have made 1/4 mile runs in C5s using the Vararam and no filter, though I certainly would not advise running with no filter, ever.

But the point here is that the Vararam and the other CAIs, which involve cutting the radiator shroud, have been shown to work to improve 1/4 mile results.

Blackwing is not a ram air or cold air system in the C6 I don't believe, is it?

I like the looks of this one. It just seems a little over priced.

I am just curious how well it fits with the C6 airbox. I have not had my airbox off yet but I believe it is different than the Z06 shown in the video.

Their web site states that it's for the C6 and Z06 so maybe someone will tell about their experience with it on a C6.

If it sold for under $100, which is what it looks like it should cost after making a nice profit, I might try one.

I believe the power increases are generated by a cooler intake charge, not the ram effect. But, I also think this Air Charger is WAAAAAY overpriced!

I just looked at my stock intake...there is NO WAY you could call this ram air on the C6 like it is on the z06. It would direct cool air to the plenum where the filters draw from.

Of course so would cutting a hole in the shroud like the FRA mod on 4th gen F-bodies.

For a real free cold air mod you could reverse the filters left to right and flip the filters and cut holes in the shroud so they fit in the area in front of the radiator. David Farmer did a nice write up with pics a while back.

Currently, the Air-Charger is priced right along with the other CAI kits on the market. However, we are reducing the price to offer a much complete package with a Halltech Stinger system. We want to become the CAI unit to get for your C6!

As previously mentioned, I am aware of only two CAI kits out there that gives you a true RAM AIR. The Air-Charger and the Vararam kit; the Air-Charger was first into the C6 market. We marketed the unit towards the C6 Z06 crowd first, and now for to the Standard C6 crowd. Both kits direct the air straight into the air filter and then into the T-body.

Listen folks, all of the CAI kits are great quality pieces, but none are a true ram air kit like the AC and the VRR. The others rely on that same air that floats around the radiator cavity (warmer air). And warmer air is not the ticket for greater power, however, they are much better than the stock set up.

Warmer air means less power, see for yourselves. Flip your filters and cut holes on your shroud, or used some of the other units besideds the AC or the VRR, then check your AIT reading with a Tech II and tell me what you see. I tell what you'll see: your timing getting pull down due to higher AIT readings and thus make less power versus the other two alternatives (AC and VRR) due to the hot air coming from the radiator cavity area and from around the engine bay

Thanks.

Be on the look out for the new upcoming price and special offer!

this is a article from VR. It's no wonder the guys at Cartek have the fastest head and cam cars in the country. Some of our customers with stroker motors have gained up to 30 Ft-lbs of torque and 18-22 Hp more than a Donaldson. The reason here is simple. Proper air box design engineered to out flow the competition all the way to 700 Bhp or 8000 Rpm!

Does anyone know if a mounted license plate causes any disruption of air flow into the snorkel of the Vararam Snakecharmer, and if so how much?

It looks like it would ...it's one of the reasons I haven't committed to a Vararam just yet, I don't have a front plate on now but if I get pulled over for it (been lucky so far) I will be putting it on and I don't want to block the scoop.

Thats not how ram air works. Ram air effect does indeed work in front of an air filter because you are creating an area of high pressure air in the intake tract and this will lower the amount of work(HP) lost trying pulling air into your motor. Your example of air hitting the filter (high pressure) would be correct if there was ambient pressure on the opposite side, but theres vacuum(low pressure) pulling the air though, your engine is just a big air pump, the easier you can make it pump air, the more power you will have to spin your tires

you would need to make a custom mount off side of the center or VR can change to both sides
