After reading several threads about the new 6 speed auto, I still have a few questions.
1) does it still use a hydraulic torque converter or an electronic clutch like BMW's SMG
2) when in D or S and you dont use the paddles, is the shifting as smooth and almost un-noticable like the old A4?

1) does it still use a hydraulic torque converter or an electronic clutch like BMW's SMG Fluid filled torque converter. The clutch packs apply and release is controlled by the solenoids via the PCM.

The 6 Auto is an AUTOMATIC trans with a torque converter, not an SMG. It's the same as the Automatic 4 except for 2 more speeds and an additional way of selecting gears.
At times the A6 trans can be smooth and at other times it can "hammer" you. GM seems to be "protecting the warranty" with this transmission. There has been alot of threads on rough shifting and momentary stalling. The problem of tuning when they can finally solve the torque management problem may void the warranty. Unless GM takes a different position and give us new problem solving downloads, we are stuck with their indifferent about our cars, not theirs now. There was talk about tighting up the shifts and different hydrolicis, it seems to be all talk from what the 07's are saying. Torque management is set a 281 ft lbs of torque but the trans can handle 580 I believe. I'm going throught the same problems.
