I just picked up a used 05 A4 convertible Z51. I drove the car home 1300 miles and everything was fine. Once I got home it was fine the first day and then when attempting to take the wife for a test drive - sure enough it would not start. Although everything appears fine - all lights on, accessories powered up fine & working - when attempting to start it just clicks and shuts off. If I hit it with the booster it will start right up and seem fine. I drove it last night for 30 mins and shut off - it immediately started again. Tonight I attempted to start it again just to test it and sure enough just clicking again with the low battery.
My question is - what could be causing this drain? I know the M6 has an issue with having to be left in reverse but this is an A4 so I am not aware of any of these issues that exist.

There is a BCM Reflash to address DBS (Dead Battery Syndrome) issues if that IS what you have. The same thing happened to me when I brought mine home. It WAS a BAD Battery.
A4's didnt have it as much but it can happen. It sounds like it may just be a BAD battery. Take it to GM and have them replace the battery under warranty if it still is covered.
If you have an Ipod adpater that can kill batteries too. Search for PIC4188A in the forum, this is the GM Preliminary Info about Dead Baterry issues.
This issue is known to 05's and some 06's. Check the obvious first and if everything is ok then maybe the BCM reflash as a preventitive measure...
I had the reflash done and it was pretty quick. New battery and no DBS since. Hope that helps.
My A4 (knock on wood) has been good to me so not sure on that. May want to ensure also the interior light dim switch (small round **** left of the steering wheel) did not get pushed which will leave the interior lights on after closing and locking the car. I had that issue with mine when I pushed it and did not realize it until I came back in the garage an hour later and the interior lights were still on.

Maybe
You have a cell going bad. Sounds like something that happened to me a while ago on a different car. You may need a new battery. See if you can get it load tested. My bet is a new battery will fix the issue.

its two or more years old no telling what has been done before you got it. my battery had to be changed after a fuel pump went bad from the dealer testing everything to find out what was wrong
You need a new battery. There is no DBS that I know of for automatic 05's.If this was any other car than a vette, and it started clicking when you turn the key, what would be your first thought???"CHECK THE BATTERY"!
Is it really that probable to be the battery? When it wont start all the accessories are powered fine - even appear to have nice bright xenon headlights. I understand that batteries go bad - maybe I should let it sit longer to see if it loses more of a charge.

Are there any known DBS issues with '05 A4 cars?
Yes to the probable.
No to the DBS on 05 A4's
Try a new battery, it's relatively cheap AND easy. If that doesn't work, you still have a new battery when the car goes to the dealer.

Doesn't take much to run that other stuff for a little while, and still not have enough power to start the car.
NO DBS in automatics.
