My A4 when I went to change the shift **** and was not sure how it all came apart, I knocked the arm off the micro switch. Under the boot in the front area under there are 2 micro switches. The one is for the brake pedal. I would imagine the switch went bad or something there in.

Are you parked on a hill? If so it could be torque lock. It happened to me one time in a Jeep Grand Cherokee; I had to have a tow truck push the Jeep uphill a little so I could shift out of park.
This is from the '05 owner's manual:
Torque Lock (Automatic Transmission)
If you are parking on a hill and you do not shift your
transmission into PARK (P) properly, the weight of the
vehicle may put too much force on the parking pawl
in the transmission. You may find it difficult to pull the
shift lever out of PARK (P). This is called “torque
lock.” To prevent torque lock, set the parking brake and
then shift into PARK (P) properly before you leave
the driver’s seat. To find out how, see “Shifting
Into PARK (P)” listed previously in this section.
When you are ready to drive, move the shift lever out of
PARK (P) before you release the parking brake.
If torque lock does occur, you may need to have another
vehicle push yours a little uphill to take some of the
pressure from the transmission parking pawl, so you can
pull the shift lever out of PARK (P).
I have a 05 vert with automatic car start's and runs but can't put in gear after pushing on brake pedal anybody on forum have this problem
On my 06 C6 A6, I hear the brake release "click" at the shifter when you depress the brake pedal? If you don't hear it, the micro switch could be the problem as Radical05 said. If it doesn't make a noticable click sound, then the shifter is not releasing.
