Default Z51 greasable outer ends rear toe links

The manual says they should be greased after every day on the track (P291 2007 C6).

Gee, do I need to carry a grease gun now?

Do you go to the racetrack every day?

If not, you probably can get away with keeping the grease gun in the garage and hitting the fittings when you get home.

I know it's just in summer I like to travel long distances for track events and I'd do a total of 2-3 thousand miles during the trip. I'm wondering if I should carry a grease gun with me. Specially as they warn to do it every day during track events. A bit excessive no?

How often does this need grease?

I believe the `07s no longer come with grease fittings... that may be an indicator of how important (or not) it is to have to grease the toe link ends.

In my experience, I have found that even after many miles of very spirited road driving, the toe link ends are still packed full of grease. They seem to never really need greasing at all. I've never been on the track, I am aware that the track puts an incredible amount of stress on everything, but if I can push the limits on curvy mountain roads for 5k+ miles (plus heavy rain etc) and my links are still FULL of grease, my guess is that one single track day will not completely squeeze ALL the grease out. Thus, you can probably just not worry about. Grease before you leave for the track, and grease when you get back. Also, in most cases, these links will likely last the life of the car regardless... and if they DID wear out, they would not be overly expensive or difficult to change.

Does that mean you can ONLY grease them at the track?

My 07 Z51 M6 does have the greaseable rear toe links. Haven't worried about trying to grease them since the car only has 550 miles on it.

My 07 has them, and I believe the issue with track days is not so much thrashing or wear per se, but heat from the oh-so-close rotors turning the grease to liquid combined with heavy loading.

I had mine done with high temp grease as part of my pre-trackday inspection and brake bleed, and now that I've bought higher temp pads I'm planning on wrapping them in header wrap for future events, especially for heat like Sebring in the summer.

Interesting. Thanks!

I could have sworn I had read somewhere that the `07s no longer came with grease fittings. Maybe some do and some do not depending on what parts are sitting in the bin that day during assembly. Perhaps they are phasing them out and you guys got the last of the greasable links.

The heat issue, brake heat melting the grease... that makes a lot of sense. In fact, that is really the ONLY thing that makes sense now that I think about it.

If the boots "feel" full... and if I go to add grease and old grease immediately starts oozing out the bottom of the boot I know the joint cannot take anymore grease... thus it's full.

Last time I greased the fittings, I drove about 7k miles, then went to re-grease... at that point, the moment I started gently squeezing the trigger of my mechanical pistol-grip grease gun, old (but clean) grease started oozzing out from under the boot... and the boot felt like it was under pressure, felt "full", had a balloon-like feel to it... so, in my opinion, this would mean these links did not need greasing at that point.

Unlike in the old days greasing front tie rod end links and ball joints on old cars... you could pump the grease gun a few timees and watch the limp boot puff up as it took the needed grease, without leaking. They always needed grease. So far my Z51 toe link ends almost never seem to need grease.

Remember to NOT use Mobil 1 synthetic grease on the toe link ends. I and several other members tried using Mobil 1 synth grease and we all had the same results... the grease would liquify almost immediately and drip all over the wheels... which could then get to the brakes. Mine would not stop dripping until I completely flushed out all the Mobil 1 with some good old dino grease... now it's fine. I removed the Mobil 1 cartridge from my grease gun and threw it in the garbage. Maybe just a bad batch (?), but... I'll stick to dino grease for now.
