I just installed the B&M shifter that was delivered today, the install was easier than I expected, only took about 40 minutes or so.
So I take my C6 Z51 out for a spin to check out the new shifter; shifts were noticably shorter, more precise and notchier feeling. I loved the way it feels compared to the factory shifter.
I did not notice it at first b/c my windows were down, but when I rolled up the windows, I noticed that the shifter rattled quite a bit under hard throttle, especailly at low rpm, say 4th gear, full throttle, going about 40mph. The rattle was pretty loud and annoying. I noticed that the rattle seemed to stop when I gripped the shifter firmly which leads me to believe the rattle is caused by the connection between the factory shift **** and the B&M shifter.
Tomorrow I will probably take the shift **** off and drive it to see if that stops the rattle and hopefully isolate the issue. (fingers crossed that this is the culprit).
If it does turn out to be the shift **** which I believe it is (again hopefully), anybody have any ideas as to rememdy the rattle? I know a threaded shift **** would probably be the best remedy, but I kinda what to keep the factory ****.
Think teflon tape would help? Anything to tighten the gap between the shifter and the ****?
By the way, the screw that secures the **** is securely tightened.
According to info on this forum, GM is scheduled to offer a replacement "button" that snaps onto the ball at the bottom of the shifter. This button is reputed to be the source of the rattle that many experience.
I've "played around" with both rattling B&M and stock shifters, with varying degrees of temporary or partial success, and I'm inclined to think that this new button is the best shot at a fix.
I have the same issue with third gear. I tried the teflon tape solution as well as the Lithium Grease solution, but to no avail. I have the Hurst short throw plus a Hurst pistol grip ****.
I hope SMKN 07 is correct and there is a GM solution on the near horizon, because I like the Hurst package I purchased, with the one exception being the rattle in third gear while under moderate to heavy acceleration.
