Default Jet Hot coating?

I'm gonna be ordering headers soon for my car and was wondering whether or not to jet hot coat them. I'd like to know is it necessary to do so? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Headers are expensive as is, so if I dont really need them and save $250 then thats great. Input please.

Much advice from drag racing buddies and tuners says that coating on good quality stainless headers is a waste of $. The insulation and flow improvement w/ coating supposedly is a bit overhyped. Just what I was told. You'll get many opinons to the contrary. I decided the $ was better spent on porting my intake.

They do look great coated. I just ordered my Kooks 'naked'.

I've had coated headers on my current and older car for over 10 years and they always look great. If not concerned with rapid heat dissapation or the look just get SS Headers. Personally I will always have coated and have Melrose on my Vette now.

Jet Hot coating will help your headers last longer and reduce their surface temps for improved performance. I am also getting ready to order long tube headers, I will be ordering them with Jet Hot Sterling coating because it gives them a nice shiney chrome finish rather than the stainless look.

I personnaly like the bare stainless look. It has more of a racy look to it. I'm more concerned whether or not there is a performance difference or is it just a cosmetic thing?

In my opinion, Jet Hot coating is a waste of money on Stainless headers. However, it is an absolute necessity on carbon steel headers like Melrose.

With that being said, Jet Hot is sure a good looking coating!

What about Kooks? Thats what I'm looking toward getting for my C6. Anybody have photos of the uncoated and coated headers installed?

Kooks are made from 300 series stainless steel. They will not corrode and 300 stainless has a much lower thermal conductivity than carbon steel, so you really do not NEED Jet Hot. In fact, there are some tuners that say if you coat stainless you will retain too much heat which can cause detonation. Do a search, I think Charlie at A&A has stated this. It makes sense to me.

The only reason to get your Kooks Jet Hotted is for looks. Some people like the look of stainless, but it does turn blue with age. Others like the bling of Jet Hot Sterling coating, it sure does look nice.

Jet Hot Coat is good for looks, if you want a thermal coating give Swain Tech a call, they are in NY state.

AR's going on this weekend. Several vendors told me that 304 stainless headers dissipate heat very well. If you are using carbon steel headers, the coating helps prevent rust and assists in heat dissipation. Coating on SS headers is for appearance. With the money I saved by not coating, I ordered a ported TB from Cory.

true..and being such where does the heat go ?

coating is actually to assist with thermal velocity.

keeps heat out of the engine compartment, keeps exhaust gasses hot enough long enough to assist flow. hotter gasses flow faster.

coating a set of 1 3/4" headers will make them respond as if they were slightly larger.

I am not a thermal engineer. I was told by several vendors that hot coating helps carbon steel headers more than SS because it eliminates corrosion. Corrosion helps retain heat. 304 Stainless is supposed to mimick many of the same properties that hot coating does. Therefore not totally necessary.
